[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized in his speech at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) that ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine is essential to effectively address the climate change crisis.
According to the UK Guardian on the 8th (local time), President Zelensky delivered a virtual speech at the COP27 summit held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, stating, "Russia is fueling energy price increases by reducing and cutting natural gas supplies to Europe, causing a global energy crisis," and added, "There can be no effective climate policy without peace."
He continued, "In less than six months of war, Russia has destroyed 5 million acres (approximately 20,000 km²) of Ukraine's forests," and pointed out, "The war in Ukraine is not only a national issue but a global problem, and the war has also triggered a severe international food crisis, delivering the worst blow to countries and people already suffering from climate change."
President Zelensky further stated, "Many still regard climate change response as mere rhetoric and marketing rather than real action. They are the ones who start aggressive wars when the Earth cannot tolerate even a single gunshot," once again condemning Russia.
Meanwhile, the developing country leaders attending COP27 on the same day urged not only for swift climate change response actions but also called on developed countries to promptly take responsible compensation measures. At this COP27, the issue of ‘loss and damage’ caused by climate change was officially adopted as an agenda item for the first time in 30 years since the start of the UN climate summits.
