62,472 New Confirmed Cases and 59 Deaths... Government Officially Declares COVID-19 Resurgence (Update) As health authorities forecast that daily confirmed cases could reach up to 200,000 during the full-scale winter resurgence, citizens are undergoing PCR tests at the COVID-19 screening clinic in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 7th. [Asia Economy Reporter Byeon Seon-jin] The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 9th at midnight that 62,472 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total cumulative number of confirmed cases to 25,981,655.


The number of new cases increased by 199 compared to the previous day (62,273). It is 7,735 more than a week ago on the 2nd (54,737) and 21,655 more than two weeks ago on October 26th (40,817). The government officially declared a COVID-19 resurgence on this day.


Lee Sang-min, the 2nd Deputy Head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety), stated at the Central Disaster Headquarters meeting, "The scale of the COVID-19 outbreak has been increasing for four consecutive weeks, and the infection reproduction number has exceeded 1 for three consecutive weeks, indicating that the winter resurgence is in full swing." He urged people to get vaccinated for the winter season, ventilate indoor spaces, and wear masks.


The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized is 336, and the nationwide intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy rate is 27.8%. The ICU bed occupancy rate has been rising from 15.8% in the second week of October to 18.1% in the third week, 23.5% in the fourth week, and 25.7% in the first week of November. There were 59 COVID-19 deaths reported the previous day, with a fatality rate of 0.11%.
