[Asia Economy Reporter Han Yeju] The number of smart apartments equipped with Samsung Electronics' SmartThings-based home IoT solutions has surpassed 100,000 units. This is the largest scale among domestic home appliance companies.

According to Samsung Electronics on the 9th, the company first applied SmartThings in November 2020 at Samsung C&T's Raemian Leaders One located in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Since then, through collaboration with 18 construction companies including POSCO Construction, Daewoo Construction, Hyundai Construction, Samsung C&T, and Kolon Global, the application has expanded to a total of 112 complexes.

They plan to additionally apply SmartThings to about 250,000 units in approximately 300 complexes preparing for new move-ins, and will continue to expand partnerships with construction companies to lead the trend of smart apartments.

Residents of units equipped with SmartThings-based home IoT solutions can control home appliances through the SmartThings app, as well as various devices inside the home such as lighting, heating and cooling systems, ventilation devices, and electric blinds and curtains. Additionally, they can integrally manage various convenience information related to apartment common facilities, such as elevator calls, gas valve status checks, parking information, missed visitor notifications, unmanned parcel management, and management fee guidance.

The SmartThings energy service also alleviates users' concerns about energy savings. By linking the SmartThings app with smart electricity meters within the apartment complex, users can check the entire household's electricity usage and charges considering the progressive rate system. Depending on electricity usage, appliances can be switched to 'AI saving mode' or energy-saving automation such as closing electric curtains during daytime can be executed. This method receives the previous day's electricity usage from the home network server of each apartment complex, allowing accurate data verification without installing separate devices in each household.

Samsung Electronics introduced the SmartThings energy service at POSCO Construction's Namcheon The Sharp Prestige in Busan, which began move-ins last October, and plans to actively expand it to apartments of other construction companies so that more users can experience differentiated energy management solutions.

Park Chanwoo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Home Appliance Business Division, said, "Samsung Electronics has opened the era of customized smart homes based on SmartThings, which boasts various IoT functions applied to home appliances and excellent scalability," adding, "We will continue to introduce differentiated smart home solutions so that consumers can enjoy not only home appliances but also apartment life more conveniently."
