[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The Korea Press Foundation will hold the '2022 KPF Journalism Conference' from the 9th to the 11th at the International Conference Hall on the 20th floor of the Korea Press Center.
The '2022 KPF Journalism Conference' is an international event held annually since 2017 to examine the latest issues in journalism with domestic and international journalists, experts, and scholars, and to discuss response strategies to changes in the media environment.
This year's theme is ‘Journalism ON&OFF’. It is composed of △Day 1 Trust ON, turning on sustainable journalism △Day 2 Bias OFF, stepping out of platforms △Day 3 Trust ON, Bias OFF! Moving toward the future.
The opening ceremony on the first day features a keynote speech by Professor Choi Jaecheon, Ewha Womans University Chair Professor, on the topic of ‘Ecological Transition and ESG’. This will be followed by presentations and discussions on ‘Climate and Environment’ and ‘Representation of Socially Vulnerable Groups’ under the theme of sustainable society and sustainable media.
In the Climate and Environment session, Anne-Sophie Novel, an environmental journalist who played a major role in drafting the European Environmental and Climate Crisis Journalism Charter, and Jin Minjeong, a senior research fellow at the Korea Press Foundation, will present. Melica Pesic, director of the UK Media Diversity Institute, and Yoo Sujeong, a researcher at the KBS Public Media Research Institute, will present on media inclusiveness and the representation of socially vulnerable groups.
The second day will discuss newsrooms in the post-(Off) portal era. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, professor of Political Communication at the University of Oxford and director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford, will deliver a keynote speech titled ‘The Power of Platforms on Media and Society’. Afterwards, Lee Seonggyu, CEO of Media Sphere, Oh Sewook, senior research fellow at the Korea Press Foundation, and Lee Saemmul, team leader of Digital Innovation at Dong-A Ilbo, will present on ‘Strategies to Escape Platforms’.
On the final day, Edwy Plenel, founder and publisher of the French independent media Mediapart, will give a keynote speech on the value and survival efforts of independent media fighting against the crisis of journalism trust. Following this, Sue Cross, president of the US Independent Media Association, Park Sanggyu, CEO of Sherlock, and Son Jaegwon, CEO of The Milk, will discuss the power of independent media and the future of startups.
Citizen participation programs that capture communication between journalists and citizens will be held daily alongside the KPF Journalism Conference: △Photojournalist Talk Show capturing the work and daily life of photojournalists (9th) △100-minute debate where diverse citizens talk about the media: Citizens Speak (10th) △Citizen-Journalist Dialogue ‘Switch On: The Power of Good Articles!’ (11th), where citizens meet with reporters responsible for the best-evaluated reports selected by the Foundation’s planned reporting support project.
The event will be held at the International Conference Hall on the 20th floor of the Korea Press Center and will be broadcast live on the Korea Press Foundation’s YouTube channel.
