[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Many webtoons presented by Kakao Entertainment, such as ‘Love Alarm’ and ‘God’s Taegung’, have been honored with prestigious domestic awards.
First, at the ‘2022 Today’s Our Comics’ awards ceremony held on the 3rd, Kakao Webtoon serials ‘Love Alarm’ and ‘God’s Taegung’ both received awards. Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency and the Korea Cartoonists Association, the ‘Today’s Our Comics Award’ is considered one of the three major comic awards representing Korea, alongside the ‘Korea Content Awards’ and the ‘Bucheon Manhwa Awards’. Over the years, many Kakao Entertainment works such as Yoon Tae-ho’s ‘Misaeng’, Cheon Gye-young’s ‘Audition’, Kang Full’s ‘Moving’, and Kang Tae-jin’s ‘Father’s Revenge Has No End’ have been recognized for their artistic merit through these awards.
This time, Cheon Gye-young’s ‘Love Alarm’ is a work that sounds an alarm in a society where instant romance is rampant. Additionally, Haeso-geum’s ‘God’s Taegung’ was praised by critics as a work that reflects on the ‘power of love’ that can restore and heal us.
At the 9th SF Awards hosted by the National Gwacheon Science Museum on the 15th of last month, the Kakao Webtoon serial ‘Rendezvous’ by HUN and Jimin was selected in the comic/webtoon category. Following last year’s 8th SF Awards where Siaran’s web novel ‘The Last Day in the Underworld’ won the grand prize, this marks two consecutive years of grand prize winners produced by Kakao Entertainment.
Award-winning new works also drew attention. At the Busan Webtoon Festival held on October 27th, the ‘New Star Award’ was given to the Kakao Page serial ‘The Strongest in the World’s Viewpoints Are Obsessed with Me (Sechoejip)’. The romance fantasy webtoon ‘Sechoejip’ by Kim Kokkiri and ZION features mysterious artwork reminiscent of watercolor techniques and a story based on unique fantasy themes. It has attracted significant attention as a new work, recording about 46 million views combined for the webtoon and its original web novel on Kakao Page, building a strong fan base among readers.
Kakao Entertainment’s works have consistently shown strong results, being recognized not only this year but also last year with awards such as the ‘2021 Korea Content Awards’, ‘2021 Today’s Our Comics Award’, and the ‘Bucheon Manhwa Awards’, as well as winning the Harvey Award globally, earning widespread recognition for their artistic quality from critics and industry professionals both domestically and internationally.
