[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City, Jeollabuk-do is accelerating efforts to become a hub for the advanced bio industry.
The city announced on the 4th that it plans to develop an advanced medical complex on approximately 1.8 million square meters of the Sinjeong-dong Research and Development Special Zone over 30 years from 2023 to 2052.
With a total project cost of about 1.7 trillion KRW, the plan aims to build core infrastructure such as a new drug and medical device development center, a new drug production center, and an experimental animal center to promote the development of the medical bio industry along with regional growth.
In particular, unlike the advanced medical complexes in Osong, Chungbuk, which specialize in bio new drugs and BT-based medical devices, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk, which focus on synthetic new drugs and IT-based medical devices, the city plans to foster the advanced bio industry as the next-generation core industry of Jeollabuk-do through convergence with data and AI-based industries using a differentiated strategy.
On the 3rd, the city held a final research report meeting for the establishment plan of the natural product-specialized advanced medical complex at the city hall disaster safety situation room.
This meeting was organized to receive reports on the content and plans for the advanced medical complex development, conduct detailed discussions and gather opinions, and finalize the results of the research service for the establishment plan.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Lee Hak-su, key researchers from research institutions, Lee Man-jae and Kim Seok-hwan of the Jeongeup City Council Economic Industry Committee, and 15 city officials.
During the meeting, analysis of the existing Daegu-Gyeongbuk and Osong advanced medical complexes and expert opinions were collected, and discussions were held on differentiated specialization plans that are equal to or greater than those.
Mayor Lee Hak-su said, “We will concentrate all our capabilities so that our region can be designated as the third advanced medical complex following Daegu and Osong and emerge as a new bio hub of South Korea.”
Meanwhile, the Sinjeong-dong Research and Development Special Zone, where the advanced medical complex will be located, houses three government-funded research institutes (Jeollabuk-do branch of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Jeollabuk-do branch of the Korea Institute of Toxicology, and the Advanced Radiation Research Institute of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute).
These institutions plan to serve as core infrastructure for developing new drugs and medical devices based on their research and development capabilities.
