[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yuseonghun) held a 'Kkakdugi Kimchi Making' event on the 3rd at the Geumcheon Urban Agriculture Experience Center.

Seven organizations participated in this event. Volunteer camps from Doksan 1-dong, Siheung 4-dong, and Siheung 5-dong, along with the 'Mom's Hand Volunteer Group' from Doksan 2-dong, the 'Doksan 2-dong Love Association (Dok2Samo)', the 'Hwapyeong Volunteer Group' from Siheung 2-dong, and the urban agriculture community 'Flower Middle-aged Dreaming of Small but Certain Happiness' participated to practice sharing.

The volunteers gathered early in the morning and made kkakdugi kimchi using radishes grown at the Geumcheon Urban Agriculture Experience Center and Geumnarae Sky Garden (the slope from the 1st to 3rd floors of the district office). The kimchi made that day will be delivered to neighbors in need through cooperation between the participating organizations and the local community centers.

Yuseonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "I believe the residents who receive the kkakdugi kimchi made with full sincerity will be grateful," and added, "I thank the volunteer groups who always work hard for neighbors in need."

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Wono) held a donation ceremony for the 'Love Kimchi Sharing' sponsorship fund from the Happiness ICT Foundation (CEO Kim Junbeom) at the district office on the 3rd.

Happiness ICT is a social enterprise that creates jobs for socially vulnerable groups and provides public ICT services. To help neighbors have a warm winter, it donated 30 million won to the comprehensive social welfare centers in the area. Using the donated funds, the district plans to prepare 600 boxes of kimchi, each weighing about 10kg, and deliver them to vulnerable groups across 17 neighborhoods.

This year, the district is promoting the 'Our Neighborhood Warm Welfare Center Project' with the Seongdong, Oksu, and Seongsu comprehensive social welfare centers. Through work exchanges between welfare centers and local community centers, they plan to adjust overlapping recipients and improve efficiency in providing welfare services.

The 'Our Neighborhood Warm Welfare Center' project means that welfare centers go out into the community to solve welfare issues through cooperation with residents, fulfilling their role as regional welfare hubs.

At the donation ceremony, CEO Kim Junbeom of Happiness ICT said, "I know many people are struggling due to this year's economic downturn and rising prices. We prepared the kimchi sharing sponsorship fund to provide some support to our neighbors."

Jung Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Thank you for sending warm support to vulnerable groups in the region even during difficult times," and added, "Seongdong-gu will also work harder to widely spread the culture of sharing and donation that delivers warmth."

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is operating a special collection period for kimchi-making waste to ensure that residents do not experience inconvenience when disposing of kimchi waste during the peak kimchi-making season.

Although kimchi waste should be disposed of in food waste volume-based bags as a rule, considering the temporary large amount generated during the kimchi-making season, it is temporarily allowed to be disposed of in general waste volume-based bags for two months from November to December.

This applies only to general households and small restaurants. Large-scale food waste generators such as collective catering facilities with more than 100 meals per day and general restaurants with a business area of 200m² or more are excluded.

Kimchi waste includes only vegetables such as cabbage, salted cabbage, radish, and radish greens. Large vegetables should be cut into smaller pieces, and if they contain a lot of moisture, it should be squeezed out before disposal. However, green onions, scallions, onions including roots and peels, garlic stalks, chili seeds, chili stems, and chili stalks should be disposed of as general waste.

During the special collection period, kimchi waste should be placed in general volume-based bags of 10 liters or more, with disposal stickers clearly attached to the outside of the bag, and put out in front of your house or store's food waste bin from 6 p.m. to midnight on all days except Saturdays for collection.

Waste mixed with general household waste will not be collected, and illegal dumping will be fined.

Kimchi waste disposal stickers can be obtained directly from the local community centers or downloaded from the district website.

The district plans to promptly collect kimchi waste during the special collection period and regularly inspect back roads and traditional markets to prevent accumulation of kimchi waste.

Mayor Park Junhee said, "We will focus on promoting the correct disposal and collection methods to minimize inconvenience to residents," and requested, "We ask residents to cooperate with proper separation and disposal to ensure smooth collection of kimchi waste during the kimchi-making season."
