[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Police Agency will conduct a special crackdown on drunk driving for three months from the 1st of this month until January 31st of next year.
According to Jeju Police on the 1st, this crackdown is being proactively implemented due to concerns that drunk driving will increase amid the festive atmosphere as year-end and New Year’s parties and various gatherings increase during the holiday season.
In addition, in cooperation with the Autonomous Police Unit, the crackdown will be carried out as a ‘spot mobile’ operation by frequently changing locations regardless of day or night, targeting downtown entertainment districts, major roadsides, residential backstreets (alleys), and coastal roads.
Traffic accidents caused by drunk driving occur more than 300 times annually, and the number of fatalities has been steadily increasing over the past four years.
As of the end of September, a total of 231 drunk driving traffic accidents occurred, resulting in 6 deaths.
As of the end of September, 1,267 people (485 suspensions, 782 cancellations) were caught in drunk driving crackdowns, and as a result of the special year-end and New Year’s drunk driving crackdown conducted from the end of November last year to the end of January this year, 446 people (192 suspensions, 254 cancellations) were caught, averaging about 5 people per day.
A Jeju Police official said, “Drunk driving is a ‘serious criminal act’ that can instantly take away not only one’s own precious life, property, and happiness but also those of others, and it is a ‘time bomb’ that can lead to major accidents anytime and anywhere.”
He added, “Please do not forget that drunk driving will be strictly cracked down on anytime and anywhere, and we urge you never to get behind the wheel even after just one drink.”
