'Bicycle Safety Educator' Kim Jundae Wins Grand Prize at Seoul City Traffic Culture Awards

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 30th that it has selected a total of six recipients for this year’s Seoul City Traffic Culture Awards. The Seoul City Traffic Culture Awards, which recognize citizens or organizations that have contributed to the safety of urban transportation and the development of traffic culture in Seoul, began in 1999 and this year marks the 24th ceremony.

The Grand Prize was awarded to Kim Jundae (69), head of the education team of the Gangseo Yangcheon Green Bicycle Volunteer Group, who actively volunteered in bicycle safety education for infants, elementary and middle school students, and adults. He contributed to a safer bicycle culture by providing traffic law experience-based education tailored to infants at kindergartens and daycare centers, and by conducting visiting school bicycle safety education for elementary and middle school students according to their grade levels, through both theoretical and practical training.

The Excellence Award went to Gil Ji-won, president of the Guro Police Station Green Mothers’ Association, and the Seoul Traffic Disabled Association. Gil Ji-won (42), president of the Guro Police Station Green Mothers’ Association, has been active since 2014 as the head of the Green Mothers’ Association, School Safety Support Group, and the Guro Green Mothers’ Federation in Guro-gu. She volunteers for traffic safety in front of local elementary schools and conducts traffic safety campaigns two to three times a month. Since 2021, she has continuously participated in the development, installation, and promotion of a two-wheeled vehicle safe driving guidance system in cooperation with Guro District Office to enhance traffic safety.

The Merit Award was given to Kim Byung-jun, CEO of Hantech, the Seoul branch of the Korea Road Traffic Authority, and Korea Urban Airport. Kim Byung-jun (39), CEO of the smart traffic safety company Hantech, installed the nation’s first “real-time right-turn notifier” at the intersection in front of Munhyeon Elementary School in Songpa-gu. This device enhances drivers’ attention through visual (panel) and auditory (sound) signals, minimizing blind spots during right turns and helping to prevent traffic accidents.

The Seoul branch of the Korea Road Traffic Authority has been working since 1997 to create a safe traffic environment with Seoul citizens and to prevent road traffic accidents. Through systematic efforts to reduce and prevent traffic accidents and proactively identify and improve road hazards, it achieved the lowest fatality rate in 2021 with 0.67 deaths per 10,000 vehicles in Seoul, about 62% of the national average.

Korea Urban Airport, an airport bus company operating routes to Gimpo and Incheon airports, took the lead in cooperating with Seoul City’s special transportation requests for overseas arrivals during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. While all airport bus companies suspended operations due to infection fears, labor and management at Korea Urban Airport collaborated to actively support the special transportation service.

Baek Ho, Director of the Seoul City Urban Transportation Office, expressed sincere gratitude to all awardees for their best efforts in their respective fields for the development of traffic culture, saying, “Thanks especially to the citizens working hard on the ground, Seoul’s public transportation has been able to make great progress.”
