POSCO JK Solid Solution Completes Solid Electrolyte Factory Construction... Annual Production Capacity of 24 Tons
POSCO Group has completed the construction of a solid electrolyte factory, a core material for all-solid-state batteries that are gaining attention as next-generation batteries, and has started full-scale production.
On the 28th, POSCO Group held a completion ceremony for 'POSCO JK Solid Solution' attended by about 50 people including Kim Byung-gyu, Deputy Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do, Lee Jong-hee, Chairman of Yangsan City Council, Lee Jeong-gon, Vice Mayor of Yangsan City, Yoo Byung-ok, Head of Eco-friendly Future Materials Team (Vice President) at POSCO Holdings, Lee Kyung-seop, Head of Secondary Battery Materials Business Promotion Group, and Kim Tae-heung, President of Jeonggwan.
Yoo Byung-ok, Head of the Eco-friendly Future Materials Team at POSCO Holdings, said in his congratulatory speech, "The solid electrolyte business is a representative future materials business of POSCO Group," adding, "Using the completion of the POSCO JK Solid Solution factory as a stepping stone, we will proceed with certification targeting global battery and finished car companies, expand production capacity to several thousand tons, and secure the next-generation secondary battery materials market."
POSCO JK Solid Solution is a joint venture established in February this year by POSCO Holdings and Jeonggwan, which possesses the highest level of solid electrolyte technology in Korea. With this completion, it has secured an annual production capacity of 24 tons of solid electrolyte.
Solid electrolyte is a core material used in all-solid-state batteries. All-solid-state batteries increase safety by replacing liquid electrolytes with solid ones, reducing the risk of fire. The solid electrolyte replaces the liquid electrolyte and also serves as a separator, increasing battery density.
Meanwhile, ahead of the completion of the solid electrolyte production company POSCO JK Solid Solution this year, POSCO Group is proactively strengthening its business portfolio by investing in all-solid-state battery company Prologium, acquiring silicon anode material company Terra Technos, and making other preemptive investments in the next-generation secondary battery materials sector.
