[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The "Mudflat World Natural Heritage Conservation Headquarters," which will carry out integrated management for the systematic conservation of the world natural heritage mudflats, consistent preservation and utilization, and domestic and international cooperation projects, will be established in the Aphae-eup area of Sinan, Jeollanam-do.
Jeollanam-do announced on the 27th that Sinan-gun was finally selected as the site for the "Mudflat World Natural Heritage Conservation Headquarters," a project announced by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
It is regarded as laying the foundation to become the central hub of the world natural heritage policy for "Korea's Mudflats."
The Conservation Headquarters is scheduled to begin construction in 2024 after basic and detailed designs in 2023 and to be completed in 2026.
Over the next 30 years, economic ripple effects are expected, including a production inducement effect of 92.7 billion KRW, a value-added effect of 51.4 billion KRW, and employment inducement of 2,100 people.
Jeollanam-do has made multifaceted efforts to attract the Conservation Headquarters, including proposing that the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries include the efforts and contributions of Jeollanam-do and Sinan-gun to the registration of the world natural heritage in the evaluation criteria of the public contest plan.
They also conducted public surveys on the site location, collected signatures supporting Jeollanam-do’s bid, and carried out media promotions.
Additionally, Jeollanam-do is the only metropolitan local government nationwide operating the "Mudflat Conservation Management Promotion Team," performing dedicated mudflat tasks such as establishing the "Basic Survey and Mid- to Long-Term Comprehensive Plan for Mudflats" for systematic mudflat management.
Sinan-gun accounts for 85.7% of the world natural heritage "Korea's Mudflats." It played a leading and core role in achieving the world natural heritage registration and provides support. It also forms an organic network with research institutions, private organizations, and local governments.
The Sinan mudflats have been recognized for their outstanding universal value, including the appearance of 1,109 diverse species and designation as a major habitat on migratory routes for migratory birds.
Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, said, "I welcome the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ selection of Sinan-gun as the site for the Mudflat World Natural Heritage Conservation Headquarters," adding, "Together with the Conservation Headquarters, we will create future value through systematic conservation and wise use of the mudflat world natural heritage."
