[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province emphasized the necessity of attracting the site during the on-site inspection for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' public contest for the "Tidal Flat World Natural Heritage Conservation Headquarters," highlighting biodiversity and other factors.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 24th, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries conducted on-site inspections starting in Shinan, followed by Gochang in Jeonbuk and Seocheon in Chungbuk on the same day.
The Conservation Headquarters, a national institution, will serve as a control tower for the conservation management and utilization of Korea's tidal flat ecosystem, which was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in July last year.
The province accounts for 90.4% of the natural heritage tidal flat area, with Shinan County alone accounting for 85.7%, positioning it as the most suitable site to integrally and consistently promote the continuous tidal flat heritage, and is actively pursuing the attraction of the Conservation Headquarters.
The Jeonnam on-site inspection included participation from Moon Geum-ju, Vice Governor of Jeonnam Province; Park Chang-hwan, Deputy Governor for Political Affairs; Seo Sam-seok, National Assembly member; and Park Woo-ryang, Mayor of Shinan County, who provided a comprehensive explanation to the evaluation committee regarding the suitability of the Conservation Headquarters' location.
Vice Governor Moon Geum-ju emphasized, "The Shinan tidal flats played a pivotal role in being recognized for their outstanding universal value, including biodiversity, and being registered as a World Natural Heritage site. The Conservation Headquarters, which will research and manage the continuous heritage and marine ecosystem centered on the Shinan tidal flats, is optimally located in Shinan."
Deputy Governor Park Chang-hwan explained the necessity of Jeonnam's attraction, stating, "I hope the evaluation will be conducted from the public's perspective, considering the past preparations for World Heritage registration, the current registration, and future expansion possibilities."
On the 14th, the three local governments participated in presentations via video transmission at the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation.
On that day, the province asserted the justification for the Conservation Headquarters' location, highlighting Shinan County as having the largest area of World Heritage, its contribution to tidal flat conservation, and designation as a major habitat on the East Asian migratory bird route, making it the optimal site.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to announce the final site for the Conservation Headquarters by the end of this month following the on-site inspections.
