Yeongdeungpo-gu Hosts 2022 Popo Festa 'Da!' with Themes of Youth Autonomy, Career, Science, and Books

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will hold Yeongdeungpo’s representative education festival for residents including children and adolescents, ‘Popo Festa,’ on the 22nd from 3 PM to 8 PM at Yeongdeungpo Park.

Returning as an in-person event for the first time in three years since COVID-19, this Popo Festa was prepared to offer residents enjoyment and benefits in daily life and to support the recovery of everyday life.

Popo Festa is a festival named by combining ‘Po’ from Yeongdeungpo and ‘four’ representing four types of events, making ‘Popo.’ It has established itself as Yeongdeungpo’s representative festival where four educational festivals in the fields of ‘Youth Autonomy, Career, Science, and Books’ are combined and enjoyed simultaneously.

This year, under the theme of ‘Future Science and Technology,’ about 100 exhibition and experience booths and over 20 performances will be held throughout Yeongdeungpo Park. Around 60 youth clubs, 21 educational and youth institutions, and 5 innovation education district divisions, totaling about 100 organizations and groups, will participate in booth operations, providing diverse attractions and entertainment based on rich content.

Looking at the experience zone booths, they include ▲ Future Science and Technology Experience (autonomous vehicle and drone control) ▲ Themed Book Curation ▲ Edible Insect Experience ▲ Creativity Contest ▲ Multicultural and Disability Awareness Improvement Booths ▲ Making Your Own Mini Flowerpot (Youth Club), among others.

Additionally, in the exhibition zone, visitors can appreciate poetry and painting works by seniors participating in the YDP Adult Literacy Education Center, and the YDP Future Lifelong Learning Center offers classes such as folk painting, providing participants with learning and enjoyment through various experiences.

Moreover, a 2-meter-high bookshelf shaped like a book is installed in Yeongdeungpo Park to create a ‘Reading Zone,’ a small pause within the festival with books. Anyone can relax leisurely in this unique space and enjoy the pleasure of reading.

The opening ceremony of Popo Festa will begin with a performance by the entertainer robot ‘Titan Robot.’ Following this, the educational vision of ‘Yeongdeungpo, a Future Education City’ will be proclaimed, and a special congratulatory performance by the b-boy dance team ‘Jinjo Crew’ will add to the festival’s fiery enthusiasm. Then, stages featuring youth clubs performing cheerleading, band, gayageum, and violin will unfold, enriching the festival further.

The district operates stroller and wheelchair rental services to ensure broad participation without exclusion. In case of emergencies or if assistance is needed, anyone can seek guidance from volunteers and staff.

Park Sang-jun, Director of Future Education, said, “We hope this festival, held face-to-face for the first time in three years, will support residents’ daily life recovery and serve as a place to share Yeongdeungpo’s educational vision. Especially, we expect it to be a platform where students, whose activities were restricted due to COVID-19, can freely demonstrate their capabilities.”

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced on the 22nd that it will hold the 2022 Nowon-gu Youth Festival ‘Sowon’.

The youth festival ‘Sowon’ means ‘Nowon’s youth, make a wish,’ a name created and operated directly by a youth planning group consisting of 16 members.

The event is divided into two parts. As it is the first in-person festival in three years, Part 1 (12:00?15:30) will relieve accumulated stress through a ‘small sports day’ for physical activities. Part 2 (16:00?19:00) moves indoors for congratulatory performances by Bumkey and Vincent Blue, along with performances by 14 youth clubs.

Starting at 12 PM at Nohae Sports Park, the opening ceremony will be followed by the small sports day. Youth and residents participating in the festival will communicate through a balloon-popping game. On-site registration will allow participation in shoe archery, where participants throw shoes to hit targets, and Pipe Hole-in-One, where participants cooperate to connect pipes to move ping-pong balls, encouraging movement and laughter to relieve stress.

All participants can also join the mystery event ‘Find the USB.’ By solving quizzes in the guide, participants who find the USB containing the performance MR thief will receive prize kits. Prizes include sunglasses, tattoo stickers, glow sticks, and other items suitable for the festival.

Youth-prepared booths will also operate. A total of 35 teams will participate, offering experience booths such as school violence prevention, making personalized bandanas, Polaroid photo shoots, and visual impairment awareness activities, as well as food booths, club activity photo exhibitions, bingo games combined with coding, and water gun shooting, providing healthy experiences and play.

Additionally, popular play facilities and character photo zones such as air bounces, Avengers, and Pok?mon photo zones will be installed for youth enjoyment.

Part 2 moves from Nohae Sports Park to the nearby Junggye Community Sports Center at 4 PM. The congratulatory performances by singer-songwriter Bumkey and Vincent Blue will begin, followed by performances by 14 youth clubs showcasing dance, band, vocal, and rap skills.

The district supports various youth clubs and youth participation projects in fields such as school violence prevention campaigns, job experiences, character education, environmental protection, volunteering, and media, in cooperation with Gongneung Youth Culture Information Center, Sanggye Youth Culture House, Seoul Nowon Youth Center, and Seoul Nowon Youth Future Career Center.

Since 2020, youth hangouts have been established. Aiming to create spaces within a 10-minute walk from home where youth can engage healthily, seven youth hangouts equipped with facilities such as one-person media rooms, band practice rooms, coin karaoke, and PC zones are currently operating.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “I hope this festival, where youth can showcase their talents and passion, will provide comfort and healing to youth exhausted by COVID-19. We will continue to actively support and implement various projects for the youth, the future of Nowon-gu.”

A costume event allows participants to become fairy tale protagonists, and other experience programs include a photo booth and cotton candy making.

Visitors can also meet popular and world fairy tales and experience activities from the books. Programs include planting kidney beans using kits after reading ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and making gingerbread houses after reading ‘Hansel and Gretel,’ allowing deeper understanding of fairy tales through direct experience.

The Theme Park Zone features rides such as a carousel swing and mini gyro drop, transforming the Seocho-gu Office plaza into a fairy tale amusement park offering various pleasures.

At the Seoripul Book Market, visitors can donate books to nearby Seocho public libraries before the festival and receive book exchange coupons to swap for desired books on the festival day. The event also distributes old magazines for free. The market encourages sharing and appreciation of books by exchanging books owned by local residents.

The festival also offers diverse stage performances, including music performances by the Seoripul Youth Planning Group, bubble shows, and circus acts, providing fascinating and exciting entertainment for families.
