[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has become a lifelong learning city.
The district received a new lifelong learning city plaque at the '2022 Korea Lifelong Learning Expo' held at the AT Center on the 7th.
A lifelong learning city refers to a city where a learning community is formed so that anyone can enjoy learning anytime, anywhere, to improve individual quality of life and enhance the competitiveness of the entire city.
Gwangjin-gu was designated as a new lifelong learning city in 2022 by being selected in the Ministry of Education's ‘Regional Lifelong Education Activation Support Project’ contest in February, securing a national subsidy of 90 million KRW.
The district set the educational vision of ‘Learning that touches life. Lifelong Learning City Gwangjin’ and established the promotion strategies of ‘Connecting with each other, connecting with daily life, connecting with neighbors.’ The goal is to provide education that is practically helpful in residents' daily lives and can be shared with neighbors.
Following the lifelong learning city designation, Gwangjin-gu is promoting various projects such as ▲‘Useful and Innovative JOB Knowledge to Learn’ (hereafter BaeSseulSinJOB) to strengthen employment and entrepreneurship capabilities ▲Visiting Gwangnaru Academy ▲Lifelong Learning Excellent Program Contest ‘I Do It Alone; Wise Lifelong Learning’ ▲Life-touching Democratic Citizenship School ▲Support project for the growth of lifelong learning clubs.
Also, to share lifelong learning achievements this year, the ‘2022 Gwangjin-gu Lifelong Learning Metaverse Online Expo’ is scheduled to be held on the 28th.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We will develop into a happy lifelong learning city where anyone can enjoy learning anytime, anywhere,” adding, “We will strive to create a ‘Cultural Education City,’ one of the six core strategies of the 8th elected term, and prepare education support policies centered on residents.”
Lifelong learning in Mapo-gu, which had slowed down due to COVID-19, is stretching out fully again.
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) announced that from October 19 to November 23, it will operate ‘Begin Again’ as a better regular lifelong learning course for residents and an open humanities course ‘Thinking Differently’ at the Mapo-gu Lifelong Learning Center.
This program is operated face-to-face for all classes under the theme ‘Begin Again’ to spread the atmosphere of lifelong learning, which was subdued due to COVID-19, and to remind people of the joy of learning. Anyone who is a Mapo resident or works in Mapo-gu can apply.
‘Begin Again’ is a regular course held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with each session covering a different topic. The themes are ▲Starting ▲Sharing ▲Emptying ▲Filling ▲Again!, and it interestingly unfolds life stories related to humanities, music, wine, and movies.
Speakers include soprano Yoon Nari, humanities storyteller CEO Lee Soo-jung, YouTuber Yanggaeng, Leo Cinema Director Park Geun-seo, Stress Master CEO Park Jung-woo, Vision Taxi University President Jung Tae-sung, and Trend Korea Professor Jeon Mi-young.
The ‘Open Humanities’ course starts on October 20 and runs for six sessions, sharing thoughts with humanities authors under the theme ‘Thinking Differently.’ The first lecture is by Moon Yo-han, director of the Mind Research Institute, famous for ‘Time to Read Relationships,’ who talks about ‘Time to Care for Myself Today.’
Other lecturers include Anon Books CEO Lee Jung-mi, broadcaster Susan Shakiya, author Tae Ji-won of “Words of Paintings,” author Kim Sun-ho of “I Realized I Was Forty Because My Heart Was Shaken,” and book columnist Park Kyun-ho.

The tuition fee is 10,000 KRW, but it is waived or reduced for national merit recipients, basic livelihood security recipients, persons with disabilities, and seniors aged 65 or older.
Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “With the full operation of the Lifelong Learning Center, I hope it will revitalize the daily lives of residents who had to study alone at home due to COVID-19,” adding, “I hope the Mapo-gu Lifelong Learning Center programs will not only be for enjoying hobbies and leisure but also serve as an opportunity to spread a culture of self-learning and sharing with neighbors.”
Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) operates the ‘Seongbuk Open Citizens University’ through cooperation with excellent local universities to provide high-quality citizen education and foster lifelong learning capabilities in Seongbuk-gu.
The university-linked courses (‘Seongbuk in Academy’) include ▲Citizen Studies linked with Korea University (A Pleasant Encounter of Politics and Daily Life) ▲Humanities linked with Kookmin University (Men and Women in Chinese Food Culture) ▲Humanities linked with Sungshin Women’s University (Walking into Masterpieces) ▲Socioeconomics linked with Seokyeong University (Wise Asset Management) ▲Futures Studies linked with Hansung University (Environment and Future Society) ▲Cultural Arts linked with Dongduk Women’s University (From Art to Therapy) ▲Cultural Arts linked with Korea National University of Arts (Stories of Classical Music), offering eight citizen education courses that utilize the characteristics and strengths of each university.
There is also a specialized course unique to Seongbuk-gu, the Gerontology Academy, which, thanks to enthusiastic response from residents, had early registration closure in September and has been operating since October.
A resident participating in this citizen university, Mr. Jung ○○, said, “This citizen education is diverse and interesting, ranging from asset management to classical music classes and courses preparing for a happy old age. I am grateful for such excellent courses,” and conveyed his thanks to the Seongbuk-gu Lifelong Learning Center.

This training course is a professional program to learn basic competencies to teach literacy education for adults who need basic learning abilities to read, write, and understand letters, such as seniors and multicultural families requiring Korean language education. It started on October 15 with Seongbuk residents interested in literacy education.
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, stated, “Starting with the opening of the Seongbuk Open Citizens University, we will continue to support lifelong learning to meet the diverse lifelong learning needs of residents.”

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) announced that on the 28th, it will hold a ‘Sharing Bazaar’ in the Mapo-gu Office plaza area, where sharing grows bigger the more it is shared.
This bazaar is organized by the Mapo-gu Church Council (Chairman Pastor Yoo Yo-han) to contribute to spreading a donation culture through resource circulation and to practice sharing.
The bazaar, which has been held annually since 2015, was suspended for two years due to COVID-19 but will be held again this year.
Most of the items sold at the bazaar were donated by local residents and supported by companies and organizations.
The Church Council plans to donate all proceeds from sales to the Mapo Talent Development Scholarship Foundation and to funds for helping marginalized groups have a warm winter, supporting welfare blind spots and vulnerable groups.
Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “While the number of residents suffering economic difficulties due to COVID-19 is increasing, the warmth of helping hands is decreasing,” adding, “I thank the Mapo-gu Church Council for organizing this warm sharing event and hope many residents will show interest and participate, as it is an opportunity to donate and buy good items at affordable prices.”
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is recruiting participants for vocational education training in general security guards and online marketing, which have high demand for job seekers and employers, to enhance residents’ job skills and increase employment opportunities.
The vocational education training provides knowledge and practical experience in the respective fields and connects participants to employment after the training.
The general security guard new training in the second half of the year will be held in two sessions: the first from October 28 to 30, and the second from November 25 to 27, three times a week for 8 hours each day, at Sogang Vocational School (Sindorim Campus) for professional education. It includes theoretical education on the Security Services Act and practical training on facility security and escort duties, with a recruitment quota of 120 people.
The online marketing expert training runs from October 31 to December 9, five days a week for 5 hours each day, at the Seoul Northeast Corporate Development Association. It covers theory and practice on digital marketing and trends, website creation, SNS advertising, etc., with a recruitment quota of 20 people.
The training is for Gwanak-gu residents. Applications for the general security guard training can be made by phone to Sogang Vocational School by the day before the training starts, and for the online marketing training by phone to the Seoul Northeast Corporate Development Association by October 25.
Final trainees will be selected considering their willingness to work and job performance ability, and only those who complete the training will be connected to employment and managed for one year.
Additionally, in August, 40 nursing care worker trainees were selected and are undergoing 6 weeks of theoretical and field training, with plans to connect certificate holders to related jobs. In 2023, training for computer tax accounting experts is also planned to provide more diverse vocational education to residents.
Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “I hope residents succeed in employment in various fields by maximizing their capabilities through vocational education training,” adding, “We will continue to operate customized employment support services and create region-specific job projects, doing our best to make Gwanak-gu a better place to live.”
