[Asia Economy Reporter Han Yeju] Samsung Electronics has achieved the industry's highest operating speed of 8.5Gbps with its latest LPDDR5X DRAM.

On the 18th, Samsung Electronics announced that it verified the operating speed of an 8GB package of LPDDR5X DRAM based on 14nm technology with EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) applied on Qualcomm's latest platform.

This comes five months after verifying 7.5Gbps in collaboration with Qualcomm last March. With LPDDR5X, Samsung Electronics has expanded the adoption scope of DRAM beyond mobile to various applications.

LPDDR DRAM, which boasts strengths of 'low power' and 'high performance,' is rapidly growing beyond the mobile market into various fields such as servers, high-performance computing (HPC), and automotive, and the market is expected to further expand into areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse.

Recently, the PC market demands memory that is small in package size yet high in performance and low in power consumption, leading to increased adoption of LPDDR DRAM. In server markets such as data centers, adopting LPDDR DRAM can reduce the power and energy required to process data, thereby lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Additionally, in the automotive sector, as rapid processing of large volumes of data collected through sensors becomes important, LPDDR DRAM is gaining attention.

The 8.5Gbps operating speed of Samsung Electronics' LPDDR5X DRAM is 1.3 times faster than the 6.4Gbps operating speed of the previous generation LPDDR5 product.

Samsung Electronics applied key circuit design technologies such as 'high-speed input/output signal improvement design,' which minimizes noise effects on communication signals between memory and mobile AP in LPDDR5X DRAM.

Lee Dong-gi, Vice President of the Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Division, said, "Through cooperation with Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics has achieved the industry's highest operating speed for LPDDR5X DRAM and has been able to advance the popularization of ultra-high-speed interfaces by more than a year. Samsung Electronics will actively expand the ultra-high-speed memory market along with technological cooperation between memory and mobile AP, including strengthening collaboration on next-generation memory standards with Qualcomm."
