[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] On the 16th, the police began an on-site investigation to determine the cause of the fire that occurred at the SK Pangyo Campus in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, where data management facilities including Kakao are located.

Ten officials, including the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency's forensic team and fire authorities, started the first on-site investigation around 10:30 a.m. The investigation is expected to focus on the electrical room on the third basement floor of Building A at the SK Pangyo Campus, where the fire is presumed to have started.

Inside the electrical room where the fire broke out, there are five shelves storing batteries, and it is known that sparks and smoke continued from these shelves during the fire. A police official stated, "We will focus on removing batteries and other items from the electrical room to identify the initial ignition point and determine the cause," adding, "Based on today's investigation results, we will decide whether additional investigations are necessary."

The fire broke out at 3:33 p.m. the previous day at the SK Pangyo Campus in Sampyeong-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, and was extinguished around 11:46 p.m., after about eight hours. Although there were no casualties, the fire caused the power supply to the server services to be cut off, resulting in various disruptions to Kakao, Daum, and Naver services. In particular, the Kakao messenger application KakaoTalk experienced a 'blackout' incident, marking the longest outage in KakaoTalk's 12-year history.
