Dongmyung University’s ‘Doing University’ Challenge Stands Out Jeon Ho-hwan, President of Dongmyeong University Do-ing, recently specially invited the current bowling team students who swept the gold medal (men's trio) and silver medal (women's individual) at the National Sports Festival, along with coaches Lee Seung-young and Shin Jung-hoon, to the president's office on October 14 to encourage them.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Dongmyung University is currently in a festive mood. The university president’s smile stretches from ear to ear as good news continues to spread domestically and internationally, enhancing the university’s reputation.

Since April last year, when President Jeon Ho-hwan took office as the 10th president, advocating practical academies focused on practice, challenge, and experience, he has been leading the ‘Do-ing University,’ steadily adding valuable achievements to the celebration table. With numerous news and increasing ‘events,’ the festive atmosphere is proving quite enjoyable.

The president, faculty, staff, and students are eagerly absorbing the good news spreading at home and abroad, enjoying the rising brand value of Dongmyung University people.

The university’s fame has stood out in sports, culture, and arts fields such as Taekwondo, bowling, and shooting. Especially, the bowling team’s rapid rise as a prestigious program delights the university community, and the Taekwondo team’s performance in the U.S. was featured in one of the world’s most expensive broadcast programs, making a notable impression.

President Jeon Ho-hwan of Dongmyung University’s Do-ing program has been busier than ever due to these celebrations. On the 14th, he invited the bowling team students who recently swept the gold medal (men’s trio) and silver medal (women’s individual) at the National Sports Festival, along with coaches Lee Seung-young and Shin Jung-hoon, to the president’s office to encourage them.

At the 103rd National Sports Festival (October 7?13), Dongmyung University’s bowling team won the university division gold medal in the men’s trio (Sports Rehabilitation Department’s Kang Ju-seok, Kim Seung-bin, among others) and the silver medal in the women’s individual event (Global Cultural Contents Department’s Jang Ga-young). This marks the 10th year of the bowling team achieving the nation’s top results.

In 2022, Dongmyung University’s bowling team also won the bronze medal in the men’s five-person university division at the 23rd Korea Bowling Association President’s Cup National Bowling Tournament. Previously, in 2019, they earned multiple medals including the bronze in the women’s trio at the 100th National Sports Festival, silver in the women’s individual all-around at the 38th Korea Bowling Association President’s Cup National Men’s and Women’s Bowling Championships, silver in the women’s masters and bronze in the women’s duo at the 24th Daegu Mayor’s National Men’s and Women’s Bowling Tournament, silver in the women’s individual at the 30th Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism National Student Bowling Tournament, and gold medals in both men’s and women’s individual events at the 36th Busan Mayor’s National Bowling Tournament.

President Jeon Ho-hwan highly praised the team, saying, “Due to COVID-19, national sports festivals were not held for the past two years, so Dongmyung University has effectively dominated national bowling competitions.” He also encouraged them as “Do-ing talents who boldly pursue challenge, experience, and practice in the sports, culture, and arts fields, showing the most outstanding performance since the team’s founding.”

Emphasizing the Do-ing mindset of “executing and realizing everything,” President Jeon said, “In the unpredictable future brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Do-ing talents will be more recognized than young people who only study at desks.” He cited the recent example of students’ Taekwondo demonstration performance invited by the NFL in the U.S.

Founded in March 2013, Dongmyung University’s bowling team produced youth national representative player Jang Ga-young this year. Coach Lee Seung-young, who has experience as the director of the Busan Nam-gu Office professional team, was appointed youth national team coach in May 2022. Ten players including Kang Ju-seok and Yang Hyun-dong (both Sports Rehabilitation Department 4th year), Kim Seung-bin (Sports Rehabilitation Department 3rd year), Bae Seo-hyun (Sports Rehabilitation Department 2nd year), Na Yo-jun, Choi Eun-do, Kim Seung-hyun, Won Jae-min (all Global Cultural Contents Department 1st year), Kim Yu-kyung (Sports Rehabilitation Department 3rd year), and Jang Ga-young (Global Contents Department 1st year) work closely with coaches Lee Seung-young and Shin Jung-hoon. Nationwide, 24 teams including Dongmyung University’s bowling team are active.

Dongmyung University students also performed a joint Taekwondo demonstration with the Angel Peace Arts Group and the U.S. MBA demonstration team during the halftime show of the Washington Commanders-Philadelphia Eagles game (Washington DC Commanders home stadium) on September 25, which was attended by tens of thousands of spectators.

This was a moment when Dongmyung University’s name was etched into the eyes of the world, invited by the U.S. NFL (National Football League). MBA (Martial Arts Black Belt Academy) is a martial arts academy in the U.S. with over 150 dojos, led by Director Choi Seung-min, a Dongmyung University alumnus.

As President Jeon Ho-hwan said, Dongmyung University is aiming not to produce desk-bound talents but to target practice and challenge toward the world.
