[Seoul District News] Installation of 9.96m x 13m facade on Geumcheon-gu Office main building... Geumcheon-gu launches 'Southwest Development Team' to establish Seoul gateway city status... Dongjak-gu holds 2nd anniversary event for Kim Young-sam Public Library
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) has installed a large media canvas on the exterior wall of the government building, giving the urban landscape a fresh new look.
The media canvas, installed on the entire right exterior wall of the main government building from the 1st to the 5th floor, measures 9.96m wide and 13m high. It broadcasts unique media art videos that break away from the traditional image of government offices.
Through the colorful LED-lit media canvas, residents can check various contents including announcements about festivals and events, which has received great positive responses from the community.
The media canvas lights up daily at sunset and turns off at 11 PM.
The district plans to utilize the scalability of digital content to operate the media canvas in various and broad ways.
Previously, the district removed hazardous trees at the entrance of the government building and pruned branches. The freed-up space was landscaped with grass and other plants to create a garden.
Additionally, large LED digital clocks and analog clocks with high practicality were installed on the upper exterior walls of both the main and annex buildings to enhance convenience for residents and elevate the building’s dignity.
A Guro-gu official said, “Through the installation of the media canvas and the maintenance of the surroundings of the government building, we expect the government building to become a landmark of the area while maximizing promotional effects. We will continue to strive to make the government office a pleasant and comfortable place for residents to use.”
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) established the ‘Southwest Development Team’ under the Urban Planning Division of the Green Future City Bureau through an organizational restructuring on August 16 and is now operating it in full swing.
The Southwest Development Team aims to induce redevelopment of the aging large-scale urban planning facilities around Seoksu Station area, such as Siheung Distribution Market and Jungang Steel Market, to shed the neglected image of the border area and establish a new status as the gateway city of the southwest region.
Siheung Distribution Market (97 Siheung-daero, Geumcheon-gu) is a large-scale store complex opened in 1987, covering approximately 125,567㎡. It houses over 3,700 businesses specializing in the distribution of machinery and metal parts, but due to aging buildings and inefficient land use, changes are needed to meet new consumption and distribution trends.
Geumcheon-gu applied for designation as an urban high-tech logistics complex by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and was selected as a pilot urban high-tech logistics complex in 2016. Once the project’s implementing body and method are determined and the project proceeds in earnest, the district plans to actively support its transformation into a cutting-edge logistics complex befitting Seoul’s gateway city.
Jungang Steel Market (46 Siheung-daero, Geumcheon-gu) has also been operating since 1987, covering about 31,964㎡ and housing around 340 businesses specializing in steel processing and distribution. Due to building aging and dust and noise generated from steel processing and assembly, improvements to the surrounding residential environment are required.
In 2017, Geumcheon-gu established the Seoksu Station area district unit plan to provide a foundation for residents to develop autonomously. Reflecting the basic plan for creating Seoul’s gateway city, the district plans to introduce industrial support facilities linked to job creation and foster commercial and residential complex facilities to enable Geumcheon-gu to leap forward as an advanced gateway city.
Yoo Sung-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Geumcheon-gu has very high potential to grow as an industrial city and Seoul’s gateway city. As the 8th elected government marks its 30th anniversary, we will do our best to leap forward as an advanced city with a young and innovative brand.”
Dongjak-gu (District Mayor Park Il-ha) announced on the 14th that it will hold a 2nd anniversary event for the opening of the Kim Young-sam Library (operated by Dongjak Cultural Foundation).
Unlike last year’s non-face-to-face event due to COVID-19, this year a variety of cultural experience events and diverse attractions have been prepared for local residents to participate directly.
The main event will be held from the 25th to the 30th and will take place in various locations within the library building, covering four categories: performances/lectures, exhibitions, events, and experiences.
The main programs include ▲ a meeting with author Kwak Jae-sik, ▲ storytelling, ▲ augmented reality picture book original art exhibition, ▲ club manuscript exhibition, ▲ blind book package lending event, and ▲ augmented reality picture book experience, all designed to promote reading culture.
Additionally, as a pre-event, on the 15th at 3 PM in the basement 3rd floor auditorium, a ‘Blacklight Puppet Show, The Ugly Duckling’ will be held for families to enjoy together.
Anyone can participate in the events, but ▲ the meeting with author Kwak Jae-sik and ▲ the blacklight puppet show require prior reservation. Detailed information can be found on the Dongjak-gu Integrated Library website or the Kim Young-sam Library SNS.
Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, “To celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the opening, we have prepared various programs that people can directly participate in and enjoy, so we hope many will join. We will do our best to ensure everyone can enjoy intellectual pleasure in their daily lives at the library.”
