The First Domestic Local Government to Receive the Asia Pacific Tourism Association (PATA) Award
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The 'Gangwon Workation' project promoted by the Gangwon Tourism Foundation won the Gold Award in the Global Marketing category at the 'Asia Pacific Tourism Association (PATA) Gold Awards 2022' held locally in Macau on the 7th.
The Gangwon Tourism Foundation's 'Gangwon Workation Project' is a flagship project initiated to revitalize the domestic tourism market, which has been stagnant due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation.
According to the foundation, the workation concept of "commuting to the mountains, leaving work by the sea" received high praise for increasing regional consumption and creating economic ripple effects through weekday floating populations.
The project attracted remote and telecommuting workers as participants in the Gangwon Workation, activating weekday tourism and increasing the average length of stay, which garnered great responses from participants.
Having led the activation of workations, the Gangwon Tourism Foundation is exploring the potential of the domestic workation market through participants in the 'Workation Special Exhibition' conducted with online travel agencies, Pyeongchang and Goseong workations promoted at the corporate level, and Yeongwol and Yangyang workations carried out in collaboration with the Seoul Business Agency.
Meanwhile, the Asia Pacific Tourism Association (PATA) was established in 1951 as a specialized international tourism organization to promote tourism businesses in the Asia-Pacific region and has over 650 member companies, including government tourism agencies from 82 countries.
Every year, PATA selects outstanding tourism projects and campaigns in the Asia-Pacific region through the Gold Awards. This year marks the 27th edition, with 136 projects nominated in fields such as marketing and sustainability, and 25 works selected.
Kang Ok-hee, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, said, "As far as I know, this is the first time a Regional Tourism Organization (RTO), not a National Tourism Organization (NTO), in Korea has won the PATA Gold Award," adding, "We will expand the status of Gangwon tourism worldwide by developing not only workations but also innovative tourism marketing projects."
