[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] In Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, incidents of people being stung by hornets and either dying or requiring hospitalization continue to occur.
On the 7th (local time), according to the Vietnamese local media VN Express, a 53-year-old man who fell into a coma after being stung by a hornet eventually died from shock. The man was stung after accidentally piercing a hornet's nest, immediately lost consciousness, fell into a coma, and ultimately died from cardiac arrest caused by shock.
Earlier, on the 1st, five men in their 20s were hospitalized simultaneously after playing with a hornet's nest and being stung. They exhibited symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and headaches. The most severe case involved a person who was stung as many as 20 times and suffered septic shock. According to Thak Tet Hospital, where they are receiving treatment, the patients are currently in stable condition.
In South Korea, bee sting incidents are not uncommon, with an average of about 5,000 cases occurring annually. Recently, on the 5th, a contract worker named Mr. A (63) died after being stung by a hornet while performing grass-cutting work at a children's park in Iksan City, Jeonbuk Province. Especially in autumn, which is the active season for hornets, 85% of annual bee sting incidents occur between July and October, so special caution is required during outdoor activities such as grass cutting or hiking.
If you discover a hornet's nest, never try to remove it yourself; instead, report it to emergency services by calling 119. If you accidentally disturb a nest, hornets tend to focus their attacks on the head, so protect your head and evacuate quickly. Also, during outdoor activities, avoid using perfumes or strongly scented cosmetics, and since dark and deep colors stimulate hornet aggression, it is better to wear light-colored clothes and hats. If stung, keep the affected area elevated and cool the skin, and seek hospital treatment within one hour if possible.
