[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] The Small and Medium Business Corporation (hereinafter referred to as SBC, Chairman Kim Hak-do) announced on the 7th that it conducted a training session to strengthen the policy-making capabilities of African startup policy officials in collaboration with UN Habitat (hereinafter Habitat).
This policy training was conducted in a webinar format connecting Seoul with Rwanda and Tanzania online, with 36 policy officials from major government ministries and affiliated small and medium business support agencies in Rwanda and Tanzania participating.
On the day, SBC employees in charge of each project directly participated to introduce key projects such as the Youth Startup Academy, policy funds, training, and carbon neutrality support policies, and also shared ways to revitalize the African startup ecosystem.
SBC and Habitat signed a memorandum of understanding in 2019 to promote global youth startups and have carried out various cooperative projects utilizing the capabilities and experiences of both organizations.
In particular, in 2020 and 2021, Kenya and Uganda were selected as strategic countries for expansion, and Korea’s startup ecosystem development experience was transferred. This year, innovation startup conferences and business consultations were held targeting East African regions such as Rwanda and Tanzania.
Kim Moon-hwan, Head of SBC’s Global Growth Division, said, "Including five sessions this year, we have conducted policy training for 341 public officials from 20 developing countries over the past three years. We will continue to transfer Korea’s small business policy support experience to promote mutual development with partner countries and actively support the expansion of overseas new markets for domestic small and medium ventures."
