[Asia Economy Reporter Bang Je-il] Eric Weinberg, the creator of the popular American medical drama 'Scrubs,' has been charged with sexual assault.

On the 6th (local time), the Los Angeles (LA) County Prosecutor's Office announced that Weinberg was indicted on 18 felony charges, accusing him of raping five women.

According to the prosecution, Weinberg approached young women between 2014 and 2019 under the pretense of photography sessions and committed various sexual crimes including rape, sexual abuse, confinement, and bodily harm. He mainly lured women from coffee shops, supermarkets, and pie shops to his home.

In a statement released that day, the prosecution said, "Weinberg used his glamorous Hollywood career to seduce young women," adding, "Some people use their power to harm others, and some of the victims will have to live with trauma for the rest of their lives."

Earlier, LA Police Department sexual crime investigators arrested Weinberg in mid-July in connection with sexual crimes that occurred between 2012 and 2019. At that time, the LA police confirmed at least eight women as victims of Weinberg. After news of his arrest spread, dozens of women came forward reporting that they had been victimized by him.

In response, the prosecution believes there may be more victims of Weinberg and urged victims to come forward.

Meanwhile, Weinberg, who was arrested in July, is currently out on bail after paying $5 million (approximately 7 billion KRW). The criminal trial proceedings will begin on the 25th.

Weinberg, 62 years old this year, co-produced over 100 episodes of Scrubs from 2000 to 2006 and worked as a producer and drama writer on works such as 'Californication,' 'Killing It,' and 'Man at Work.'
