[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] A man in his 60s who wielded a weapon in succession at a restaurant and a hof in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, killing the restaurant owner and attempting to kill the hof owner, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Criminal Division 2 of the Chuncheon District Court Gangneung Branch (Chief Judge Lee Donghee) sentenced A (61) to life imprisonment on the 6th on charges of murder and attempted murder.
A was prosecuted for wielding a weapon at a restaurant in Gangneung City around 5 p.m. on June 30, killing the female owner B in her 50s, and then wielding a weapon at a hof, attempting to kill the female owner C in her 50s but failing.
According to the investigation, A thought that C usually looked down on him and decided to kill her, but since the hof was closed, he drank at B’s restaurant, and after being scolded by B, he committed the crime.
Immediately after the crime, A moved about 1.6 km from the restaurant to C’s hof and attempted to kill C by wielding a weapon.
A surrendered to the police immediately after the crime and was arrested.
The court explained the sentencing reason, saying, "He committed a horrific crime for a trivial reason that he was looked down upon, has a prior record of attempted murder in 2010, and above all, the bereaved families strongly demand severe punishment."
It added, "The attempted murder was only an attempt because the blade slipped out, and it is hard to imagine the pain the surviving victim endured."
A claimed diminished mental capacity in court, but the court acknowledged that A was diagnosed with a level 3 mental disorder in 2004 and had received psychiatric treatment, yet judged that he was not in a diminished mental state at the time of the crime.
