[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, has urged caution to avoid tick bites ahead of the autumn crop harvest season.
According to the county on the 6th, autumn ticks mainly inhabit grasslands in mountain foothills and hiking trails, and during autumn to winter, they often spread to farmland due to wild animals descending to cultivated fields in search of food.
If bitten by a tick, one can contract severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), tsutsugamushi disease, and other illnesses. If symptoms worsen, platelet and white blood cell counts decrease, potentially leading to death.
Recently, one person in Jangseong was infected but has since recovered.
To avoid tick bites, wear long-sleeved clothing, long pants, hats, gloves, neck scarves, and boots during farming or outdoor activities.
After outdoor activities, take a shower immediately and check for any tick bites. Clothes worn should be washed separately.
If bitten by a tick, disinfect the bite area and monitor for symptoms within the 14-day incubation period. If symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain occur, visit a hospital immediately.
Since symptoms resemble those of COVID-19, it is advisable to inform medical staff of any recent outdoor activity history.
A health center official said, “We conduct monthly tick prevention education for farmers,” and added, “Please always follow prevention guidelines, such as minimizing skin exposure during outdoor activities.”
