[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Dong-joo] On the 6th, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, held a meeting with cartoon artist organizations such as the Webtoon Association, the Korea Cartoonists Association, and the Uri Manhwa Solidarity at the National Assembly.

At the meeting, Lee said, “It is shocking that attempts and actions are being made to block free expression for political reasons while Korea’s cultural content industry is becoming known worldwide,” targeting the government’s move to sanction the cartoon “Yoon Seok-yeol Car,” which satirizes President Yoon Seok-yeol. He pointed out, “When a conservative government comes to power, there are incidents of suppressing creative freedom in culture and arts, such as blacklists.”

In particular, Lee quoted the late former President Kim Dae-jung, who said regarding the cultural industry, “Support but do not interfere,” and emphasized, “I believe it is the role of the state to recognize and expand the free domain of cultural and artistic creation.”
