Equipped with a multipurpose gymnasium, sports facilities, and cultural classrooms in a building with 1 basement and 4 above-ground floors
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, held the opening ceremony of Seonghwang Sports Center (Multipurpose Gymnasium) on the 6th.
The city plans to start a pilot operation of the first-floor community sports facilities from the 11th, gradually open the center until the end of the year, and fully operate the entire multipurpose gymnasium from January next year.
About 200 people attended the opening ceremony, including Mayor Jeong In-hwa, Seo Young-bae, chairman of the city council, provincial council members, and heads of related organizations.
Seonghwang Sports Center, built within Seonghwang Neighborhood Park, has a total floor area of 17,991㎡, four floors above ground and one basement floor. Construction began in September 2019 and was completed in May 2022 after two years and eight months, with a total investment of 33.9 billion KRW (7.5 billion KRW from the national government and 26.4 billion KRW from the city).
The city developed Seonghwang Sports Center as a ‘complex sports space.’ The first floor houses community sports rooms where table tennis, badminton, squash, aerobics, and yoga can be practiced. The second floor consists of cultural activity spaces such as seminar rooms, cultural classrooms, and club rooms.
The third and fourth floors are dedicated gymnasium spaces with basketball, volleyball, and jokgu courts, and have spectator seats for over 1,500 people.
Meanwhile, the city selected the name ‘Seonghwang Sports Center (Multipurpose Gymnasium)’ through a public contest in May this year.
Before the opening, aerobics and yoga classes recruited 20 members in three groups on a first-come, first-served basis, with additional waiting lists, and the enrollment was completed successfully.
Park Sang-hoon, head of the Sports Division, said, “Public sports facilities have been lacking in both quantity and quality compared to other local governments, but from now on, we will create a space for citizens’ community sports, social activities, and a small-scale complex cultural space.”
