Kim Gun, Head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Negotiation Headquarters, Holds Phone Talks with Sung Kim, U.S. Representative, and Takehiro, Japanese Representative
Shares Serious Concerns, Strongly Condemns
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] In response to North Korea's consecutive missile launches, our government is maintaining close communication with the United States and Japanese governments.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 6th, the senior representatives for North Korea nuclear issues from South Korea, the U.S., and Japan held a telephone consultation on the same day, urging North Korea to halt its provocations and agreeing to continue bilateral and trilateral communication for a unified international response.
That morning, our senior representative for North Korea nuclear issues, Kim Gun, Head of the Korea Peace Negotiation Headquarters, spoke separately with Sung Kim, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, and Takehiro Funakoshi, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the consultation, the three senior representatives shared serious concerns and strongly condemned North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches just two days after firing an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) on the 4th.
They also called for the immediate cessation of these provocations, which clearly violate multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The three senior representatives agreed to continue bilateral and trilateral communication and cooperation to ensure a united and resolute international response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
Following North Korea’s ongoing provocations, Head Kim has maintained six telephone consultations over about two weeks with the U.S. and Japanese senior representatives, including trilateral talks on North Korea nuclear issues.
North Korea launched short-range ballistic missiles on the 25th, 28th, 29th of last month, and on the 1st of this month, and Head Kim consulted with the U.S. and Japan each time to discuss response measures.
When the IRBM launched by North Korea on the 4th passed over Japanese airspace, the three countries held a trilateral telephone consultation and urged North Korea to halt further provocative acts.
