[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] It has been revealed that a civilian drone was caught flying over Seoul Airport, the exclusive airport for the presidential aircraft.

According to the National Assembly inspection data received by Song Gap-seok, a member of the National Defense Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, there have been a total of 28 cases of civilian drones intruding into military bases from 2019 to June of this year.

There were 16 intrusions into Air Force bases, 11 into Army bases, and 1 into a Navy base. Notably, there were three cases where drones were caught flying over Seoul Airport, the exclusive airport for the presidential aircraft.

According to the current Aviation Safety Act, flying drones without permission is prohibited within a 9.3 km radius control zone from the airport, the Demilitarized Zone, and military bases. If necessary, prior approval must be obtained. However, Song pointed out that the fines for violations range only from 1 million to 2 million KRW depending on the number of offenses. Last year, a civilian who was caught illegally filming a military facility in Changwon with a drone was prosecuted due to the severity of the case but was fined only 1 million KRW.

Song emphasized, "An effective surveillance system must be established to prepare against illegal drone intrusions."
