Suddenly Chilly Weather... Heating Appliances and Winter Products Are Trending

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Recently, as morning temperatures have dropped and the daily temperature range has widened, sales of winter products such as heating appliances and cold-weather gear have significantly increased in the retail industry. Each company has launched special promotions and discount events to actively target consumers.

According to Lotte Hi-Mart on the 6th, sales of heating appliances such as heaters and electric mats increased by 35% compared to the same period last year from the 28th of last month to the 4th of this month. During the same period, at Electronic Land, sales of electric heating devices rose by 145%, and warm air fans by 89%. Typically, sales of heating appliances become active in late autumn when the weather suddenly turns chilly, but this year sales surged unusually early, starting in September.

Electronics retailers have started heating appliance discount events to capture demand. Lotte Hi-Mart is offering up to 15% discounts on popular brand heating appliances such as Shinil and Boguk Electronics this month. Electronic Land is giving back up to 10% in points when purchasing promotional heating device models.

According to Lotte Department Store, men's fashion sales increased by 40%, women's fashion by 30%, and outdoor wear by 35% compared to last year. At Shinsegae Department Store, outdoor wear sales rose by 25.7%, and bedding by 10%. Lotte Department Store is holding fall and winter bedding discount events this month at each store featuring brands like Peter Reed and April Home. Shinsegae Department Store is offering special anniversary deals for the premium bedding brand Freshfind’s 12th anniversary at seven stores including the main branch, Gangnam, and Gyeonggi locations until the 16th, with bedding products available at discounts of up to 65%.

At large supermarkets, more customers are seeking winter goods. At E-Mart, sales of fall and winter jumpers increased by 43%, bedding by 29%, electric mats by 41%, and electric heating devices by 45%. At Lotte Mart, bedding sales rose by 60%, blankets by 50%, and electric mats by 40%, showing high growth rates. E-Mart is offering discounts of up to 20,000 KRW on Shinil electric mats, electric blankets, and heaters until the 12th. Homeplus is running discount events of up to 10,000 KRW on electric blankets from brands such as Yupa, Shinil, and Boguk.

A retail industry official said, “Regardless of the season, abnormal climate phenomena continue steadily, so consumers seem to be more sensitive to weather changes than in the past,” adding, “We are preparing to introduce various heating appliances so that customers can prepare for winter more easily and comfortably.”
