Citizen's Sharp Eyes Lead to Arrest of Voice Phishing Collector

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] A voice phishing collector who tried to snatch cash from a victim was caught thanks to a citizen's sharp observation.

The Gwangju Northern Police Station announced on the 5th that they arrested A (23) on suspicion of attempted fraud with the help of a citizen.

A is accused of attempting to fraudulently obtain 16 million won from a victim around 2 p.m. on the 4th under the instructions of a telephone financial fraud (voice phishing) organization.

A was caught following a report from a citizen who noticed suspicious behavior.

The citizen said, "While walking, I found an elderly person holding a bundle of money and suspected something as he was taking turns talking on the phone with a young man in front of him."

The police plan to investigate whether A has any additional undisclosed illicit gains.

Meanwhile, the police plan to reward the citizen who contributed to the arrest.

A police official said, "This case reminds us of the importance of citizen reports," and urged, "If you witness someone holding a bundle of money and talking on the phone while meeting people, please report immediately to 112."
