[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Jun-hyung] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 5th that it held the ‘17th Electronics and Information Technology (IT) Day’ at COEX in Seoul. About 300 industry, academia, and research officials attended the event, including Jang Young-jin, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Han Jong-hee, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics. Vice Minister Jang encouraged the electronics and IT industry officials in his congratulatory speech.

Electronics and IT Day has been held annually since 2005, when the annual export value of the domestic electronics and IT industry first surpassed 100 billion dollars. On the occasion of the 17th Electronics and IT Day this year, the government awarded 41 contributors to the related industries with government honors, including 2 Industrial Medals, 2 Industrial Decorations, and 5 Presidential Citations.

The Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to Lee Sang-kyu, Vice President of LG Electronics. He is recognized for leading future technologies through the launch of premium home appliances and enhancing the status of Korean home appliances in the global market. The Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to Kim Doo-young, Vice President of Samsung Electro-Mechanics. He was commended for raising the competitiveness of the domestic materials and components industry through innovation in technology and quality of ceramic capacitors (MLCC), a core component of the electronics industry.

The Korea Electronics Show (KES) was also held at COEX on the same day. As the largest electronics and IT exhibition in Korea, KES is also called the ‘Korean version of the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES)’. Celebrating its 53rd edition this year, 450 companies including global corporations and startups participated to showcase advanced and innovative products.

Vice Minister Jang said, “Although difficulties such as concerns about stagflation are expected after COVID-19, new markets such as robotics and automotive electronics can be opportunities for a new leap forward, so bold innovation and challenges by companies are necessary,” adding, “The government will also support a technology development budget of 350 billion won over the next five years in line with corporate efforts.”
