"Preparing for the Local Era Centered on True Autonomy, Decentralization, and Balanced Development"

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] Park Il-ho, mayor of Miryang City, Gyeongnam, was elected as the vice chairman of the "8th Term Republic of Korea Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads Association (hereinafter referred to as the Association)" at the first joint chairpersons' meeting of the 1st year of the 8th term on the 28th of last month.
At the first joint chairpersons' meeting, the Association appointed and organized the executive members of the joint chairpersons for the first half of the 8th term and decided to provide disaster-related support funds of 5 million KRW each to 18 cities, counties, and districts, including Gwanak-gu in Seoul, which was declared a special disaster area due to the heavy rain in the central region in June and Typhoon Hinnamnor that struck in September.
The Republic of Korea Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads Association is an organization representing basic local governments, with 226 heads of basic local governments participating as members. Its purpose is to contribute to the sound development of local autonomy by promoting exchange and cooperation among cities, counties, and districts and by consulting on common issues.
It also promotes opinions and proposals on laws and national policies affecting local autonomy, exchanges information and conducts research projects on common issues of cities, counties, and districts, promotes projects related to exchange and cooperation among them, and carries out other necessary projects to achieve the Association's objectives.
The joint chairpersons for the first half of the 8th term consist of 15 chairpersons by province, with a term lasting until June 30, 2024.
Mayor Park said, "I will do my best together with the chairpersons by province, including the Association chairman, to prepare for the era of local governance centered on true decentralization and balanced development."
Mayor Park is leading Miryang City in the 8th term following the 6th and 7th terms and was elected as the chairman of the 21st Gyeongnam Mayors and County Governors Association, representing 18 cities and counties in Gyeongnam.
