[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced that it has signed a friendship exchange agreement with Selenge, Mongolia.
Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, toured Selenge and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, for 4 nights and 5 days from September 19 to 23. This visit was arranged following a meeting last month with Damdinsuren Unurbolor, a member of the Mongolian parliament from Selenge, and was made possible by an invitation from En Lakhbadorj, Governor of Selenge.
The Mongolian delegation consisted of Eunpyeong-gu officials, members of the Eunpyeong-gu Council (Chairman Gi Noman), the Eunpyeong Chamber of Commerce (President Kim Eun-bok), and the social welfare corporation Angels Haven (CEO Jo Jun-ho), completing a busy schedule over the 4 nights and 5 days.
To establish a foundation for local businesspeople and welfare institutions to enter Mongolia, a friendship exchange agreement was signed with Selenge Aimag, which is rapidly emerging as an international trade hub. Meetings with high-ranking Mongolian officials were also held. An Aimag is an administrative division used in Mongolia, equivalent to a province (do) in South Korea.
The district signed a friendship exchange agreement with Selenge Aimag focusing on revitalizing the regional economy and exchanging human resources across various fields. Selenge is one of Mongolia’s 21 Aimags and serves as a key gateway through which the Eurasian Transcontinental Railway passes. In the future, after the connection of the North-South railway, it will be an important strategic point enabling access from Eunpyeong-gu’s Susaek Station to Europe.
En Lakhbadorj, Governor of Selenge, said in his congratulatory remarks at the signing ceremony, “The signing of this agreement with Eunpyeong-gu, Republic of Korea, will mark the beginning of sustained development for both countries.”
He also made a surprising proposal during the subsequent meeting, expressing a desire to promote a trilateral economic cooperation forum involving South Korea’s Eunpyeong-gu, Mongolia’s Selenge, and Russia.
In Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, in-depth individual meetings were held with Deputy Prime Minister Sainbuyan Amarsaikhan, Minister of Finance Chimed Khurelbaatar, and Member of Parliament Damdinsuren Unurbolor.
According to the district, all Mongolian leaders expressed a unified view: “We want to benchmark South Korea’s advanced technology and look forward to deep cooperation with Eunpyeong-gu.”
In response, Mayor Kim pledged, “We will actively strive for mutual development between Eunpyeong-gu and Mongolia.”
The delegation also visited KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) Mongolia Office and KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) Ulaanbaatar Trade Center in succession. They identified support measures necessary for local businesspeople to enter Mongolia and discussed key cooperation methods, including how local governments can participate in projects.
Furthermore, to support Eunpyeong-gu youth’s international experience, they expressed a strong willingness to actively participate in international volunteer projects and explored cooperation plans.
Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, “Not only has Eunpyeong-gu’s international status risen, but we have also achieved results beyond expectations for local businesspeople and social welfare institutions entering Mongolia. We will continue to do our best in our roles to promote Eunpyeong-gu’s international exchanges.”
