[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) Jongam-dong Community Security Council and Life Line Comprehensive Social Welfare Center have stepped up to support single-person households vulnerable to housing instability in the area.

On the 29th of last month, with the sponsorship of the Community Chest of Korea and hosted by the Jongam-dong Community Security Council and Life Line Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, the ‘Hope Connection Package Sharing Event’ was held at the Jongam-dong Resident Center to support single-person households living in goshiwon (boarding houses) in Jongam-dong who are at high risk of social isolation.

Sixty vulnerable households residing in goshiwon (boarding houses) within Jongam-dong were selected as beneficiaries through recommendations from the resident center and welfare center. Thirteen types of food and daily necessities tailored to the needs of the recipients were assembled, and along with door-hanger flyers (photo), council members, resident center staff, and welfare center staff formed teams to visit the goshiwon directly to deliver the packages and conduct a campaign to identify blind spots in welfare.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “Social disconnection and loneliness among single-person households can manifest in various extreme forms. We will do our best to continuously identify blind spots with high risk of disconnection within the community to prevent solitary deaths.”

Jung Se-gyun, Chairman of the Jongam-dong Community Security Council, stated, “We ask for residents’ interest and participation so that we can carefully care for the vulnerable single-person households in our neighborhood and continuously build a warm community care network.”

Kim Yeon-eun, Director of Life Line Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, said, “We are grateful to be able to support high-risk socially isolated single-person households more effectively through public-private cooperation, especially as this issue has persisted since COVID-19. We will continue to provide support in close cooperation with the district office.”

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) held the ‘1st Our Neighborhood Disabled Curling Competition’ at 11 a.m. on the 29th of last month at the Geumnarae Culture and Sports Center.

The disabled curling competition was planned to promote disabled sports following the successful hosting of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics but had not been held due to COVID-19 until now.

Geumcheon-gu, together with the Geumcheon Disabled Welfare Center, organized this sports event to meet the demand for disabled sports and to create a space for harmony between disabled and non-disabled people.

The competition featured 72 athletes from 14 teams representing 13 disabled welfare facilities, competing in preliminary and final tournament matches. The event also included a congratulatory performance by Dankook University’s cheer squad ‘Amidas,’ followed by Taekwondo dance and a performance by the dance group ‘Step Up’ composed of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Additionally, for those unable to participate in the competition, an ‘Easy Curling Competition’ was held, along with new sports experience booths and photo zones featuring finger curling, mole games, and Schulte tables, which both disabled and non-disabled people could easily enjoy, allowing cheer squads and spectators to have fun.

Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “The disabled curling competition, held for the first time this year, is a meaningful event aimed at moving our community toward a society where everyone lives together through sports. We will spare no support to ensure this competition continues to develop in the future.”
