[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Starbucks Korea announced on the 30th that it delivered 10,000 bags of eco-friendly coffee compost to 18 tea farming households in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, the day before (29th).
On that day, Starbucks partners visited Borimjeda in Boseong-eup and held a delivery ceremony attended by Kim Cheol-woo, Governor of Boseong-gun, Seo Sang-gyun, Chairman of the Boseong Tea Producers Cooperative, and officials from tea farming households in the Boseong area. The 10,000 bags of coffee compost donated by Starbucks to support tea farmers in the Boseong region amount to 200 tons.
Since 2015, Starbucks has been continuously supporting the production of compost made from coffee grounds after establishing a cooperation with Gyeonggi Province to promote agricultural product consumption and resource recycling. In 2016, Starbucks signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Environment and the Resource Circulation Social Solidarity to pilot a project for activating coffee grounds recycling, becoming the first in the industry to do so, and through this, established a process for recycling coffee grounds.
Through this effort, the cumulative production of coffee compost supported by Starbucks over the past eight years has reached 9.75 million bags, and it is expected to surpass a total of 10 million bags within this year.
