District Mayor Cho Owns 50 Billion Won in Real Estate... Including Officetels, Commercial Buildings, and an Apartment in Dogok-dong

[Public Officials' Asset Disclosure] Jo Seong-myeong, Gangnam District Mayor, Tops with 52.8 Billion KRW


[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Among the 814 public officials elected in the June 1 local elections, Cho Seongmyeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, Seoul, reported the largest assets amounting to 52.8 billion KRW. The real estate holdings alone reach 50 billion KRW.


According to the asset registration details of newly elected officials in the June 1 local elections, published in the government gazette by the Public Officials Ethics Committee on the 30th, as of July 1 this year, Mayor Cho's assets total 52.77607 billion KRW. He holds the largest assets among the 814 officials who disclosed their wealth.


Mayor Cho's assets are concentrated in real estate, including land worth 13.2 billion KRW and buildings worth 36.1 billion KRW, totaling 49.3215 billion KRW. This includes 39 officetels, 28 commercial buildings, and 8 lodging facilities. Mayor Cho also owns an apartment in Dogok-dong.


The second wealthiest among Seoul district mayors is Moon Heonil, Mayor of Guro-gu, who reported total assets of 14.3895 billion KRW, including unlisted stocks worth 11.9 billion KRW. Following him are Park Gangsu, Mayor of Mapo-gu (7.42933 billion KRW), Jeong Munheon, Mayor of Jongno-gu (4.94011 billion KRW), and Kim Gyeongho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu (4.27469 billion KRW).


Among all 814 officials who disclosed assets, following Mayor Cho are Im Hyeongseok, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member (41.53 billion KRW), and Kim Seongsu, Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly member (27.14 billion KRW). However, it was reported that Assembly member Im mistakenly declared a membership worth 37 million KRW as 37.9 billion KRW.


Regarding metropolitan governors, Kim Jintae, Governor of Gangwon Province, reported the highest total assets of 4.13 billion KRW. He was followed by Hong Junpyo, Mayor of Daegu (4.09 billion KRW), Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province (3.89 billion KRW), Choi Minho, Mayor of Sejong (3.63 billion KRW), and Kim Gwanyeong, Governor of Jeonbuk Province (2.91 billion KRW).


Among education superintendents, Im Taehee, Superintendent of Gyeonggi Education Office, reported 4.74 billion KRW, Ha Yunsu, Superintendent of Busan Education Office, 1.39 billion KRW, and Lee Jeongseon, Superintendent of Gwangju Education Office, 1.38 billion KRW. The disclosed assets include real estate, deposits, stocks, and other holdings owned by the official, spouse, and direct ascendants and descendants as of July 1, the start date of the term.
