'Collapse Concerns' Seongnam Jeil Elementary School to Be Rebuilt with 24.1 Billion Won Investment


[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Reconstruction of Seongnam Jeil Elementary School is being promoted.


The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on the 29th that it has decided to invest 24.1 billion KRW to reconstruct the main building and annex building of Seongnam Jeil Elementary School.


Seongnam Jeil Elementary School has raised safety concerns regarding the school buildings due to nearby housing redevelopment projects.


The Office of Education decided to classify Seongnam Jeil Elementary School's Green Smart Future School project type as reconstruction to ensure student safety and guarantee learning rights.


The reconstruction targets the main building and annex building with a total area of 7,230㎡.


The Office of Education plans to complete the reconstruction by the second half of 2025 through procedures including preliminary planning services, design competitions, and design services, with a total project cost of 24.1 billion KRW.


Additionally, to establish a Gyeonggi-type Green Smart Future School, a smart environment will be built in the gymnasium of Seongnam Jeil Elementary School, along with the creation of a plaza-type space within the school and a nature-friendly ecological environment.


The reconstruction costs will be borne by the Office of Education with 19.8 billion KRW and Seongnam City with 4.3 billion KRW.


The detailed project costs are ▲main building reconstruction 13.2 billion KRW ▲annex building reconstruction 9.4 billion KRW ▲Gyeonggi-type Green Smart Future School environment construction 1.5 billion KRW.


Lee Heon-ju, head of the Green Smart Future School Promotion Team at the Office of Education, emphasized, "We are promoting reconstruction of the main and annex buildings of Seongnam Jeil Elementary School with student safety and protection of learning rights as the top priority," adding, "We will do our best to manage safety and create a pleasant learning environment while the project is underway."
