4.8 Trillion Won Mega Project, Commute Time Reduced
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The entire section of the ‘Iye-ro Road Construction Project’ between Okdong and Nongso in Ulsan, which began construction in 2010 as part of the metropolitan area traffic congestion road improvement project, will be fully opened on the 30th.
On the 29th at 4 p.m., Ulsan City will hold an opening ceremony at the Okdong Overpass in Nam-gu, attended by about 500 people including Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, local members of the National Assembly, district heads, city and district council members, residents, and construction officials.
The road construction project between Okdong and Nongso was promoted as a ‘Metropolitan Area Traffic Congestion Road Improvement Project’ to resolve chronic downtown traffic congestion caused by National Route 7 passing through the city center and severe traffic congestion due to various development projects and urban expansion. Fifty percent of the construction cost was supported by national funds.
A total of 481.3 billion KRW, including national funds, was invested in this grand project.
The construction section consists of two parts totaling 16.9 km: Section 1 is 8 km from Nam-gu Okdong’s Southern Circulation Road to Jung-gu Seongan-dong, and Section 2 is 8.9 km from Jung-gu Seongan-dong to Buk-gu Nongso-dong.
Section 2 began construction in June 2010 and was completed and opened in September 2017.
Section 1 began construction in January 2013, with the following openings: 4 km from Jung-gu Northern Circulation Road to Jung-gu Seongan-dong in June 2019, and 3 km from Nam-gu Munsu-ro to Jung-gu Northern Circulation Road in July 2022.
The remaining section from Munsu-ro to the Southern Circulation Road (1 km) will be opened at 10 a.m. on the 30th, following the opening ceremony on the same day. After 12 years and 3 months since the start of construction, the entire 16.9 km section will be fully opened.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom said, “We expect a revolutionary effect where Jung-gu, Nam-gu, and Buk-gu will become living zones within 30 minutes, reducing city traffic congestion by 20 to 30%.”
The sections of National Route 7 from Cheongryang to Okdong (1.6 km) and from Nongso to Oedong (5.9 km), managed by the Busan Regional Land Management Office, are scheduled to be completed in October 2023 and by the end of 2028, respectively.
