Drunkenly Driving at '100 km/h'... Reporter Causes Fatal Accident, Sentenced to Prison

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] A former local daily newspaper reporter who fatally struck a pedestrian while driving under the influence at high speed has been sentenced to prison.

On the 28th, according to the legal community, the Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 10 (Presiding Judge Kim Jeong-min) sentenced A (28) to 1 year and 6 months in prison on charges of dangerous driving causing death.

A was prosecuted for hitting and killing a woman in her 50s while driving under the influence on a road in Wolsan-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, around 10:35 p.m. on March 28.

A was driving at about 100 km/h on a road with a speed limit of 50 km/h and failed to notice the victim standing at the edge of the road, causing a fatal accident.

At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was measured at 0.135%.

The court explained, "The defendant admitted to the crime and is reflecting on it, reached a settlement with the bereaved families during the investigation stage and petitioned for leniency, and is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, which are favorable circumstances."

However, the court stated the sentencing reason, "Since the defendant drove a passenger car at high speed while under the influence, making normal driving difficult, resulting in death, the crime is very serious. Considering the high blood alcohol concentration level, a prison sentence is inevitable."
