Quiet SUV Reputation Like a Sedan... Meeting Customer Needs
Low RPM Suitable for Urban Driving 'Comfortable Ride'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Renault Korea Motors' QM6 is gaining attention as the epitome of urban sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Ten years ago, many people prioritized trunk cargo space when choosing an SUV. This was because many chose SUVs for practical reasons. However, as the SUV market has grown to the point of replacing sedans, consumers' selection criteria have changed significantly. The desired product attributes in SUVs have evolved.
The QM6 is an SUV designed to keep pace with these changes. Renault Korea focused on quietness when developing the QM6, reading the trend of change. The QM6 is characterized as a quiet SUV for drivers who want the comfort and quietness of a sedan or are tired of noisy SUVs. By enhancing quietness, the QM6 can be considered an SUV suited for urban life.
To enhance the QM6's quietness, Renault Korea reinforced sound-absorbing and soundproofing materials more than in other models. This prevents wind noise generated in the engine compartment and outside the vehicle from entering the passenger cabin. Sound-absorbing and soundproofing materials, comparable to those used in noisy diesel vehicles, were installed throughout. Additionally, laminated glass was used to block external noise as much as possible, and soundproof front glass was applied to all trims.
The CVT transmission is also a secret to the QM6's quietness. This is because the CVT transmission allows the engine to maintain a low RPM. Noise occurs when fuel combusts in the engine, and mechanical noise is also generated by friction among engine parts. The friction noise of engine parts increases significantly as engine speed rises. This is one of the biggest factors that degrade ride comfort.
In urban driving, the vehicle can run with relatively low power compared to other cars, so the gear ratio changes continuously in low-load sections, keeping the engine speed low. Thanks to this, there is no noise caused by engine speed fluctuations or shifting shocks, allowing for quiet driving and achieving a quiet ride.
The QM6 maintains a low engine speed of about 1300 rpm when driving at 50 km/h, enhancing both quietness and efficiency. Even when the speed increases to 100 km/h, it maintains about 1800 rpm, making it difficult to perceive noise.
The chain that causes noise during engine operation was replaced with a silent chain, which produces less noise and has better durability, eliminating uncomfortable vibrations and noise. The key change was the material switching from rubber to steel.
A Renault Korea official explained, “The QM6 is the quietest SUV in its class, even quieter than sedans,” adding, “It is receiving great love due to its quick delivery and the recently surging popularity of the LPG model option.”
