1860 Cases of Digital Sexual Crimes in Schools Over the Past 5 Years
Illegal Filming, Cyber Sexual Harassment, Distribution and Threats in Order
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Among digital sex crimes that occurred in elementary, middle, and high schools over the past five years, 3 out of 10 cases were illegal filming.
According to the "Status of Digital Sex Crimes in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools" submitted by the Ministry of Education to Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly's Education Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, a total of 1,860 digital sex crimes have occurred from 2018 to the present. Among these, illegal filming and bodycam-related crimes accounted for 589 cases (30.4%), the highest number.
Next were cyber sexual harassment with 576 cases (29.8%), and distribution and distribution threats with 458 cases (23.7%).
Digital sex crimes can also lead to physical sexual violence. Up to August of this year, there have been 7 cases of illegal filming accompanied by sexual violence and sexual harassment, already surpassing last year's total of 5 cases.
The majority of perpetrators and victims are student-to-student, accounting for 1,767 cases (95%). Digital sex crimes committed by students against school staff number 56 cases (3%), and crimes committed by school staff against students amount to 14 cases (0.8%). Digital sex crimes between school staff members are 3 cases (0.2%).
Assemblyman Min Hyung-bae stated, "The recent murder of the Sindang Station attendant, which shocked society, also began with illegal filming and distribution threats. Digital sex crimes are problematic in themselves, but we must consider the possibility that they can lead to more serious crimes." He emphasized, "The education authorities must actively respond and thoroughly implement early prevention education."
