[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 27th, the Democratic Party of Korea held a party meeting and decided to submit a motion to dismiss Foreign Minister Park Jin as a way to hold him accountable for President Yoon Seok-yeol's 'diplomatic trip controversy.'
The motion to dismiss a cabinet member is a power granted to the National Assembly under Article 63 of the Constitution. It requires the proposal of at least one-third (100 members) of the total members and approval by a majority (150 members). The Democratic Party currently holds 169 seats, enabling it to propose and approve the motion independently. The motion is automatically reported at the next plenary session and is put to a secret ballot vote within 24 to 72 hours. If not voted on within this period, the motion is automatically discarded.
After the party meeting, Chief Deputy Floor Leader Wi Seong-gon told reporters, "We decided to submit the motion to dismiss under the name of all 169 Democratic Party members," adding, "There was no dissent; it was a unanimous party consensus." He further stated, "The motion to dismiss will pass at the plenary session on the 29th."
Floor Leader Park Hong-geun said in his opening remarks at the meeting, "If proper responsibility is not held by the presidential office's diplomatic and security line, South Korea's diplomatic achievements will vanish like a sandcastle," and added, "The decision on the motion to dismiss must be made within three days of submission. I urge all members to approach the plenary vote with extraordinary resolve."
