Presiding Over the First Cabinet Meeting After the Tour
Emphasizing Achievements in the Economic Sector
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] President Yoon Suk-yeol said on the 27th, "To fundamentally solve the low birthrate and aging population problem, regions must find their own momentum and develop independently."
At the Cabinet meeting held at the Government Sejong Complex on the same day, President Yoon opened the discussion with the population issue and said, "We plan to completely reorganize the Low Birthrate and Aging Society Committee to serve as a control tower to find solutions for population decline and the era of 100-year lifespans."
This Cabinet meeting was the first chaired by President Yoon after returning from his overseas trip. He did not mention the controversies over condolences, protocol, or vulgar language that arose during the trip, but instead referred to his keynote speech at the UN and achievements in the economic sector. This was interpreted as a determination to focus on livelihood issues, putting aside the vulgar language controversy.
President Yoon emphasized, "Over the past 16 years, 280 trillion won has been poured into solving population problems, but the birthrate plummeted to 0.75 in the second quarter of this year," adding, "Starting with a thorough reflection on the existing policies that focused only on raising the birthrate, it is necessary to promote effective policies based on science and data rather than populism."
He mentioned the importance of regional development to fundamentally solve the low birthrate and aging population problem, saying, "To this end, we will regularize the Central-Local Cooperation Meeting by visiting each local government and seek ways to open a true local era together with local government heads."
Regarding the achievements of the overseas trip, he evaluated, "We clearly expressed our will to uphold the international order based on the spirit of freedom and solidarity." President Yoon introduced, "We confirmed our willingness to cooperate with other heads of state and were able to achieve meaningful results in the economic sector as well."
He continued, "Along with attracting large-scale investments in advanced industries and startups, we led cooperation from key gateways to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) new technologies through the Korea-Canada summit."
President Yoon mentioned the fire accident at the Daejeon outlet that occurred the previous day and expressed condolences for the deceased.
To the Cabinet members, he instructed, "This fire caused large-scale damage in a recently constructed modern facility," and said, "I ask the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, along with the fire authorities and related ministries, to take this as an opportunity to review the current disaster management methods from the ground up."
