[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The Ministry of Science and ICT is initiating the concretization of strategies to realize President Yoon Seok-yeol’s 'New York Initiative.' It has begun collaborating with related organizations to prepare plans for implementing follow-up measures.

On the 26th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting chaired by Second Vice Minister Park Yoon-gyu at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul, with public institutions in the digital sector and related industry associations to share the outcomes of the President’s North American tour and review and discuss follow-up plans.

This meeting was organized to share the results of the North American tour over the past four days (September 20?23), including President Yoon’s announced 'New York Initiative' and the roundtable with Canadian AI scholars, and to discuss concrete implementation plans for the New York Initiative in collaboration with industry and public institutions as follow-up measures.

Vice Minister Park emphasized the significance of the New York Initiative, stating, "It is highly meaningful that Korea has declared to the international community its determination to lead digital innovation as a global leader in the digital field." He added, "The more important task is to responsibly implement the New York Initiative. Using it as a stepping stone, we aim to share the achievements of digital innovation with global citizens and contribute to the international community."

He continued, "To this end, we are faithfully reflecting the fundamental philosophy embedded in the New York Initiative and are establishing a whole-of-government digital leap strategy to lead national digital policy. We plan to concentrate national capabilities and vigorously promote this strategy."

Earlier, on the 21st, President Yoon delivered a keynote speech titled ‘Solidarity for Digital Free Citizens’ at the Digital Vision Forum held at New York University. He presented a vision for digital innovation and proposed a digital order to realize universal human values such as freedom, human rights, and solidarity.

Vice Minister Park noted, "The president’s announcement of the digital innovation vision at New York University was met with appreciation from the NYU president and others," adding, "There was consensus on the new content presented, which includes innovation and a new order."

The government plans to develop a whole-of-government digital leap strategy that embodies the principles and philosophy of the New York Initiative to lead national digital policy. This strategy will secure digital capabilities such as artificial intelligence (AI), software (SW), and data utilization to promote comprehensive digital innovation across society and realize national values.

Sharing of outcomes from the North American tour, including the roundtable with AI scholars, also continued.

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the pioneer of deep learning, stated, "The AI revolution will definitely happen once more. That revolution is likely to be driven by hardware advancements rather than software." Professor Lisa Austin of the University of Toronto reportedly discussed the future of AI, mentioning side effects of the new order and issues related to the establishment of this new order.

Participants listened to explanations of President Yoon’s New York Initiative and collaborated to devise concrete implementation plans. The meeting was attended by eight public institutions including the Korea Communications Agency (KCA), as well as seven related digital sector associations: the Korea Information and Broadcasting Telecommunications Federation, Korea Information and Communications Promotion Association, Korea Telecommunications Operators Association, Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association, Korea Software Industry Association, Korea Internet Corporations Association, and Korea Software Technology Promotion Association.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has committed to thoroughly managing follow-up measures for the New York Initiative by reviewing outcomes and maintaining communication with related public institutions, industry, and academia.

Second Vice Minister Park Yoon-gyu stated, "The New York Initiative is a very meaningful announcement in which our country, as a model nation for digital innovation, has presented a vision, values, and an order that global citizens should pursue together regarding the global agenda of digital technology." He urged, "Now, we must concentrate national capabilities to responsibly implement the New York Initiative and ensure thorough follow-up measures to produce tangible digital innovation outcomes."
