Gwangju Dong-gu, Popular Woodworking Class 'Haegilnyeok Mangchisori'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The community welfare council of Jisan 2-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is attracting attention as the woodworking class "Hammer Sound at Dusk," operated for elderly people living alone, is gaining popularity as a place of learning for residents.

According to Dong-gu on the 26th, the Jisan 2-dong community welfare council started operating the woodworking class "Hammer Sound at Dusk" last year to help elderly people living alone regain their self-esteem and encourage a virtuous cycle of sharing by delivering the finished products they made themselves to neighbors in need.

This year's classes are being conducted as a place of learning where the entire village comes together, with last year's participants actively volunteering to assist with the lessons, gaining positive responses within the village.

At the woodworking class held that day, participants made pot holders engraved with ginkgo leaves, a symbol of Jisan 2-dong. The finished products are scheduled to be exhibited at the village festival planned for October.

Kim, an elderly participant in the woodworking class, said, "I am satisfied to be able to engage in the unfamiliar hobby of 'woodworking' while interacting with residents," adding, "I am learning with all my heart because the finished products I made with my own hands will be delivered to neighbors in need and exhibited for many people to see."

Lee Ki-jong, chairman of the council, said, "I hope this will be a time for the elderly to communicate with neighbors through unique leisure activities," and added, "We will continue to prepare various programs that can be a source of vitality in the lives of the elderly."
