[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Kwon Hyun-ji] Jeong Jin-seok, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, who is visiting Japan on the 26th to attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, stated, "Various issues, including historical conflicts, will be naturally approached through official diplomatic channels."
Before departing from Gimpo Airport on the morning of the same day, Chairman Jeong told reporters, "While resolving difficult historical issues between the two countries as they are, a two-track effort is needed to promote exchanges as desired by the young future generations of both countries."
Chairman Jeong, as the chairman of the Korea-Japan Parliamentary League, is visiting Japan for a 2-night, 3-day schedule. This is his first visit to Japan since assuming the chairmanship. On the 27th, he will attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister Abe as a member of the government condolence delegation and will also participate in a welcoming dinner meeting with the chairpersons of the Japan-Korea Parliamentary League, including the chairman and secretary-general, as well as members of the Korea-Japan Parliamentary League.
Chairman Jeong said, "I am planning a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida along with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo," and added, "I have also scheduled a meeting with U.S. Vice President Pamela Harris, who is visiting Japan."
He continued, "Since I led the policy consultation delegation to Japan in April, the bilateral relationship has undergone considerable changes. Positive developments are currently taking place, such as the resumption of flights to Haneda Airport, exemption of self-quarantine for Koreans due to COVID-19, and the restoration of visa exemption measures, all of which are expanding exchanges between Korea and Japan. I was also told that the flight we are taking today is fully booked."
Regarding the court hearing on the three injunctions filed by former leader Lee Jun-seok on the 28th, he said, "This is not a matter for me to comment on, and I will leave it to the court's judgment."
