[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The 8th term of Gangwon Province's local government is accelerating the renovation of aging facilities and the creation of tourism and convenience facilities in villages targeted by the Saemangeum New Deal 300 project within the province's fishing villages.

The province plans to complete the projects within the planned period, starting with Eodal Port in Donghae City and including other fishing ports currently under development.

The Gangwon Province East Sea Headquarters announced on the 26th, "We will modernize fishing village and port infrastructure and discover differentiated content based on key regional resources possessed by fishing villages to revitalize the declining fishing villages."

The community-based living SOC 'Saemangeum New Deal 300' project includes 15 fishing ports within the province, with a total project budget of 150.1 billion KRW secured.

Donghae Eodal Port has been newly developed into a space where people want to walk, such as the Morning Sunshine Garden and Mukho Sea Culture Road, and is evaluated as having established itself as a nationwide tourist attraction.

In particular, 'Cafe Eodal,' operated as a village income project, is gaining great popularity among tourists due to its wide-open sea views and distinctive photo zones.

Goseong Banam Port and Sokcho Jangsa Port are also accelerating project progress with the goal of completion within the year. The remaining 12 project sites plan to complete the entire project process, including approval and announcement of basic and implementation plans, by 2024.

The Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project is a fishing village development policy aimed at improving living convenience to prevent the extinction crisis of fishing villages. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to select 60 project sites nationwide through a public contest next year.

Within Gangwon Province, four sites?▲Gangneung Aninjin Port, ▲Samcheok Daejin Port, ▲Goseong Gonghyeonjin Port, and ▲Yangyang Hujin Port?are preparing to apply for next year's projects.

The East Sea Headquarters plans to focus administrative capabilities by establishing and operating a dedicated team by October to respond to the government's Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project.

Choi Seong-gyun, head of the East Sea Headquarters, said, "By attracting the Saemangeum New Deal 300 project, which receives 70% of its funding from the national government, Gangwon's fishing villages have created an opportunity to take a step forward," adding, "We will create fishing villages where people want to live and that are full of vitality."
