Ministry of Science and ICT, Yoon's 'New York Initiative' Strategy Formulated... "Achieving Digital Innovation Outcomes"


[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The Ministry of Science and ICT is initiating the preparation of an inter-ministerial strategy to materialize President Yoon Seok-yeol's 'New York Initiative.'


On the 26th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting chaired by Second Vice Minister Park Yoon-gyu at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul, together with public institutions in the digital sector and related industry associations, to share the outcomes of the President's North American tour and review and discuss follow-up plans. This meeting was organized to share the achievements of the North American tour over the past four days (September 20?23), including the 'New York Initiative' announced by President Yoon and the meeting with Canadian AI scholars, and to discuss concrete implementation measures of the New York Initiative with industry and public institutions as follow-up actions.


Earlier, on the 21st, President Yoon delivered a keynote speech titled 'Solidarity for Digital Free Citizens' at the Digital Vision Forum held at New York University. He presented a vision for digital innovation and proposed a digital order to realize universal human values such as freedom, human rights, and solidarity.


The government plans to announce this month a government-wide digital leap strategy that will lead national digital policy, reflecting the principles and philosophy of the New York Initiative. This strategy will include securing digital capabilities such as artificial intelligence (AI), software (SW), and data utilization to promote comprehensive digital innovation across society and realize national governance values.


The meeting was attended by eight public institutions including the Korea Communications Agency (KCA), as well as seven related digital sector associations: the Korea Information and Broadcasting Telecommunications Federation, Korea Information and Communications Promotion Association, Korea Telecommunications Operators Association, Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association, Korea Software Industry Association, Korea Internet Corporations Association, and Korea Software Technology Promotion Association.


The Ministry of Science and ICT has committed to continuously reviewing achievements and maintaining communication with related public institutions, industry, and academia to ensure the smooth follow-up of the New York Initiative.


Second Vice Minister Park Yoon-gyu stated, “The New York Initiative is a very meaningful announcement that presents Korea’s vision, values, and the order that global citizens should pursue together regarding digital, which is a common global agenda. Now, we must concentrate national capabilities to responsibly implement the New York Initiative and ensure follow-up measures are thoroughly executed to produce digital innovation outcomes.”
