The Reason Why Kyowon’s ‘I Can Do Coding’ Sales Increased by 400% in One Month

[Asia Economy Reporter Kwak Minjae] Sales of Kyowon Red Pen's coding learning program surged in August compared to the previous month. This is interpreted as being influenced by the recent announcement from the Ministry of Education to make coding education mandatory.

On the 24th, Kyowon stated that sales of I Can Do Coding in August increased by 400% compared to the previous month.

The background of the sales increase of I Can Do Coding is analyzed to be the Ministry of Education's recent announcement to mandate coding education. A Kyowon official explained, "After the Ministry of Education announced on August 22 that coding education will be mandatory for elementary and middle school students starting in 2025, parents' interest in coding learning programs has increased, which is the reason for the performance growth."

I Can Do Coding is one of Kyowon Red Pen's representative learning programs, launched in November 2019. It attracted parents' attention with its differentiated content called "collection-linked coding," recording sales of 15 billion KRW within a month of launch. I Can Do Coding is composed of a total of six stages to help learners understand coding concepts and develop thinking skills to efficiently handle and solve complex problems, allowing study over one and a half years. The target learners are children aged 6 years old to 6th grade in elementary school.

Another feature of I Can Do Coding is that children can naturally encounter coding while reading storybooks. After reading storybooks containing coding concepts, they scan commands made from coding puzzles through a smart lens and solve given problems on a tablet PC to develop problem-solving skills. In addition to coding puzzles, children can combine Modi Blocks and paper toys to directly create a total of 78 inventions appearing in the storybooks, fostering imagination.

A Kyowon Red Pen official said, "Since coding can be learned in connection with storybooks containing missions and explorations that systematically expand knowledge and thinking according to learning stages, it seems that parents' satisfaction has increased because it is suitable for children with no coding experience as an introductory learning program." He added, "It is recommended as a homeschooling program because it includes many hands-on activities based on teaching aids, such as making inventions by combining Modi Blocks and paper toys, rather than just theoretical learning."
