Introduction of aprons and gowns made from recycled PET bottles at over 500 group meal service sites
Increasing eco-friendly ingredients and providing eco-friendly consulting for partner companies
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Hyundai Green Food is accelerating its sustainable management by replacing all aprons and gowns worn by nutritionists, cooks, and kitchen staff at group meal service sites with eco-friendly uniforms.
Hyundai Green Food announced on the 21st that starting this month, it has introduced and is operating eco-friendly uniforms made from recycled PET bottles at over 500 group meal service sites nationwide.
The eco-friendly uniforms are made using fabric produced from recycled PET bottles, and a total of approximately 12,000 uniforms, ranging from 3 to 5 sets per employee, are provided to about 3,000 employees working at group meal service sites. The new uniforms are categorized into nutritionist gowns and aprons worn by cooks and kitchen staff, with each nutritionist gown and apron using 16 and 14 recycled PET bottles respectively.
About 180,000 recycled PET bottles are used to introduce the eco-friendly uniforms, and the company expects to reduce approximately 11 tons of carbon dioxide emissions generated during the disposal process. This effect is comparable to planting 1,627 30-year-old pine trees.
A Hyundai Green Food official said, “The introduction of these eco-friendly uniforms is part of Hyundai Green Food’s sustainable management,” adding, “The leftover fabric from the uniform production process will be upcycled into goods such as aprons and eco-bags, which will be used as customer gifts on online malls like Greeting Mall.”
Under the goal of being a “company that provides healthy food positively impacting dietary life,” Hyundai Green Food is actively promoting sustainable management across all business sectors, including care food, group meal services, and food material distribution.
In the group meal service business, 10 types of agricultural products such as onions, radishes, cabbage, green onions, and cucumbers are entirely replaced with low-carbon certified agricultural products. The purchase volume of eco-friendly food materials, including low-carbon and eco-certified agricultural products and animal welfare and antibiotic-free certified livestock products, has increased by more than 50% compared to last year.
Additionally, since last year, the “Win-Win Consulting Program” for small and medium-sized partner companies has recently added eco-friendly support to its existing hygiene and food safety fields. The Win-Win Consulting Program provides support for introducing eco-friendly packaging, reducing unnecessary resource generation in processes, and obtaining low-carbon agricultural and livestock certifications. The number of supported companies has expanded from 40 last year to 130 this year.
